Sneaky cooking

When my kids were young I would sneak various vegetables into the spaghetti sauce. Small amounts, finely chopped went unnoticed. I still do similar things at times. In the freezer I have some small packages of cooked pureed beets. I packaged them for some recipe that I just didn't make very often. Last week I put a small amount into the rhubarb sauce. The sauce was a beautiful red! And Hubby never noticed. Last night I mixed it in with the taco meat and seasoning. Hubby didn't seem to notice how red the meat was. It tasted great. I just want to use up the beet puree and not waste it. But if I tell him, he will not like it! I guess I could make soup and use up quite a bit at once. Have you ever done any sneaky cooking?

I have home made moringa powder, its very healthy and from time to time sprinkle it on dishes like fried rice.

@paigea it's not only about taste, it's probably one of the most nutritious food that is available and it's abundant here, we eat fresh leaves as vegetable and what we cannot finish, I air dry and turn to powder, here is a link to give you an idea, hope you read the whole article and see if you can find any in your area

Yes, I have chick peas in chocolate chip cookies and black beans in brownies. Of course applesauce in brownies or cakes..but the neatest thing is putting a can of diet soda in sugar free cake! yum!

@Marilynda1225 I just ate it plain, but cool whip would have been excellent.

That all sounds good. It was a brownie recipe that I pureed the beets for. Interesting about the diet soda.

I think sneaky cooking is a practice adopted by many mothers across the World to provide some nutritious food to their kids who disapprove them if given openly! Nice to know that you have expertise in this art! Thanks!

Why is it that men are like that? If you tell them what it is, they won't eat it. My ex was like that, I have several family members like that. My best friend's husband is like that now. I think he's a little worse though, he won't try it if it isn't something he likes to eat. Same way as my ex was. I have learned to just put something in without letting anyone know. As long as I know it's something they aren't allergic to? I am going with it. "Oh Amber, that was delicious!" All while I smile secretly.

Exactly. My husband is a good cook. He will use up vegetables in a stir fry sometimes. But mostly he just wants certain vegetables in it. And that's how he is with everything he cooks, and eats.

@paigea Set in their ways. I like to experiment. I don't make the same spaghetti twice. I make soups different each time. The only thing that stays virtually the same is bbq chicken and cube steak.

I do not do sneaky cooking, I add vegetable to some dishes like stews, but I usually do not add ingredients that are not part of the recipes.

@paigea I cannot eat beets, due to my kidney problems, this is something I would never recycle.

@LadyDuck I would serve it to someone who can't eat beets. What else must you avoid? I think beets are healthy for most of us.

I am fortunate that the kids don't mind veggies too much. They don't mind eating veggies or fruit. That is a good way for you to make sure your hubby eats well.

When my grandchildren were young we would sneak vegetables into their food too. Carrots worked well with anything that was red sauce based. We also grated zucchini and added them to the meatballs. The kids never knew

Yes, I still do that sort of thing. Now it is about calories, and eating less meat.

I only cook once or twice per week if and when we're both home. I work during the supper hour. Currently I don't sneak ingredients into recipes but would have no problem doing it for the same reason. My husband never thinks of asking what was put into the food unless it doesn't look or taste right. I have been giving suggestions to customers about things to try in order to introduce more veggies into foods for picky toddlers.

Luckily Hubby does a lot of our cooking. So, I only need to plan a couple suppers each week.

I have never done sneaky cooking, but should do that with beets, avocados, and curry. My husband strongly dislikes those and I love them.

I did it much more when the kids were young, mostly veggies. Not so much nowadays. I use a different approach of quietly putting down a glass of fresh juice or a booked egg or cut carrots next to my son place when he comes from hostel
