2008 Writers’ Island One of the best books I have in my growing collection of pub guides and pub related literature in general. This is a guide to the Dublin pubs frequented by the literary giants of Ireland, from Brendan Behan and James Joyce to Oscar Wilde and W B Yeats. The book is divided into three main sections; a general history of beer and drinking in Dublin, followed by a pub by pub guide to the mot literary bars of the city, with a closing section of short biographies of the great writers covered. Along the way there are Segway supplements on the Temperance Movement, the history of the mighty Guinness Brewery on the city, and features on changing licensing laws among other features. The book was inspired by a nightly pub crawl Quilligan organizes around the literary heart of the city, and his passion for both beer and book shines through. An invaluable work for me given my hopes to visit Dublin in late Summer next year.
