Payday

No, not on myLot, but my monthly payday from Social Security, which falls on the third Wednesday of the month. When you get your SS check depends on when your birthday is. Mine is the third week of the month, so that's when I get my check. My month starts when I get my check. This past month we had 5 Wednesdays. That makes for a long month between checks. It might not seem like a big deal, but when it comes to food shopping, it's a huge deal. Now, many of you know I'm on government aid for housing, medical, and food. What they give me for food, is a spit in the bucket. I'm convinced the government wouldn't mind seeing a person starve. So, a good portion of my check goes to food. For the past week, I've been counting down the days to payday. I've also been doing my best to ration what I had left for food. I was okay for the freezer, but not for produce, particularly potatoes. Last night, I was counting down the hours to payday. Before I left for the pool this morning, I verified the check in my account, paid my bills, and after the pool went shopping. Also for the past week, I've been writing down my grocery list. Which I took with me this morning. This month, I'm trying to do a bit of overstock for food. Next month my check is going to be smaller. Next month is my birthday, and I'm officially on Medicare, and Social Security takes out for Medicare Part B. Part A is covered. I don't know how it is in every state, but the state of Wisconsin helps those on low income with Medicare payments. All the paperwork is done for it, and the aid is set to start, but it takes 2 months before it goes into effect. That means I either tighten my belt and run out of food the last week of the month, or I stock up this month as much as possible. As soon as the state aid kicks in, Social Security will reimburse me for the payments they took out, and I will see a normal check once again. One thing I've had in place for a while, is a cushion on my monthly membership at the Y. When I paid it this morning, I asked when it expired, as I will be using that cushion for the next month, possibly two months. Until everything gets back to normal. I'm also waiting on the letter from Housing telling me what my portion for the rent will be starting in September. I already got the letter stating the apartment passed. I knew it would. I'm hoping with the addition of Medicare, the payment will go down, allowing me a larger amount for food, which would be great. No, I'm not going to hold my breath on it. The government wants people to be poor, so they give you just enough to live on and nothing more, and barely that. The good news is, I have food in the apartment once again. I have a hair appointment this morning, after which I'm going to finish my food shopping. I will need to suspend my appointment next month. I'll look a bit rough around the edges by the time I get my hair done again, hopefully in August. Hopefully, it won't be too bad. At least for now, everything is paid, and I have food once again. I sincerely hope we don't have another 5 Wednesday month this year. It makes life difficult, not impossible. I just need to stay ahead of the game concerning food. I will say, they, Social Services, upped my food allowance for July. I have a feeling it will go back down when the Medicare state aid kicks in. Sometimes it's wonderful getting old, sometimes not. I hope you are all having a great Wednesday. Thanks for reading. Image courtesy of Pixabay

It isn't always easy to live off a limited income. For the moment, we're only living off one income, and it's not always easy.

@lnillerman I'm glad that you were able to save and earn. I'm hoping to work as well as that my husband and I can save.

You and I are the same age, same month. I am not aware of any help for my Medicare in my state. I may need to go check into it. With hubby no longer working and me no longer working things are going to start getting really tight. Of course our house is paid for, but we do have utilities.

I hope you're already signed up for Medicare. If you aren't, they penalize you, and that penalty doesn't go away. It's perpetual. Check with your Senior Center. They will have the answers for all your Medicare questions. I'm glad your home is paid for. That's a huge plus.

I'm waiting for my social security check too but mine doesn't arrive until next week. I hear you about having to stretch that budget each month.

With 5 Wednesdays, I didn't think it would stretch far enough.

That sounds like you need to be organized. Can you eat beans on your diet? Today, I cooked chick peas, black beans and kidney beans. I used them to make bean salad that I love to eat in summer. The extras I froze, ready for other recipes. Cheap and nutritious. Even a little cheaper since I started with dried beans.

Beans are not allowed on this food program. Only the green or wax beans. I eat almost the same thing every month, so it's well organized by now.

@JustBhem I can manage on it. There isn't much leeway with it. So, I do need to be careful I don't get impulsive with shopping. Which, I don't, for the most part.

@lnillerman Social Security is something you work for your whole working life. It's taken out of your paycheck, so that when you are ready to retire, you have something to live on in your retirement years.

What a person is given for food by the government is to help not pay for it all. If the government gave us all enough to actually feed us for a month the government would go broke.

I understand completely, we live off what my husband gets from his ssi and it is not enough to get us by at all, by the end of the month we are broke and don't have food left as well, and this month we had more money go out so that hurt us a bit, so we have like 10 days to go and no money.

This is written with great feeling and drives home the reality of life for ordinary folks I felt I was in your shoes. I worked for forty years and managed to save just enough to survive but medical costs are a worry. We don't may much taxes here, so no social security unless one is in dire need. With jobs tough to retain after a certain age, we are facing uncertain times - siva

Social Security here isn't welfare. When you start working, they take a portion for Social Security from your check for your retirement years. If you have a really good job, your Social Security check is more. My problem with work was most of the jobs I had were barely minimum wage, so my Social Security check is small in comparison to many others. It makes it tight sometimes, but it's manageable for the most part. Because my check is small, I've needed to go on government assistance for my housing needs that helps pay my rent, my medical, and food. I get very little for food, but at least all my medical is fully taken care of. Now, that I'm turning 65 next month, another benefit we paid for every check is Medicare. However, only Part A is fully paid. Social Security takes Part B premium from the check they send you. With a small check, I need state aid to pay for that premium for Part B.

@just4him Thanks for the clarification. I have now a better understanding of how the system works there. I understand even among states within the US, the eligibility criteria differ. Here we contribute to a central provident fund and we get back a portion in lump sum and balance in monthly instalments after we reach the retirement age. We are covered for medicals but based on copayment. Welfare is very restricted. My professional qualification could have ensured double what I was earning, I was rather contented not taking up jobs that were too demanding. I managed to save almost every year of my forty years of working, and like others, I hope I don't outlive my savings! siva

@just4him You have a lot to deal with. I noticed your bag for money so does that mean it is half full? I didn't know one gets Social Security on your birthday. My birthday is on the 1st and I get my payments around the 5th of each month. I do not get Medicare. I started Social Security at the age of 62. When did you start yours? I do get increases at times.

It makes sense you get your payments the first Wednesday of the month because that's when your birthday is - in the first week. I started Social Security when I was 62 also. I had no choice. We had a good increase this past year. I was born on the 19th, so my payment is the third Wednesday.

I'm glad you got the payment! I don't mean to pry but you might want to look into it. I know the Y's are all run differently based on city or state. The one I had a membership at before I moved here, use to offer free membership to those that volunteered or did something to contribute back to the Y (teach a class, etc) . Some also offer discounts to membership fees based on income! It might be worth checking into! I fully agree that its silly how little some of the SS recipients receive for food assistance. I really wish EVERYONE had easier access to healthy foods regardless of income. I think it would help the country's obesity issues!

Thank you. I did check into scholarships for the Y. The YM does that, not the YW. A senior membership isn't that much a month, so it's not normally a problem. However, next month it will be, so the cushion is good. There have been times when I felt like just nixing the foodshare as the amount is so small. I'm grateful they raised it a little next month, but I'm sure it will go back down again. In fact, I got a notice that it was going lower, before they increased it. So, the increase is temporary.
