Ugh! Refrigerator slime & gunk

I am having an exciting day. I was a bit concerned about about our second refrigerator, it has been acting up. Last year when it acted up we were able to get it though the summer we just added a fan to help it cool off during the really hot days and it worked. Once we hit winter it was fine all winter and kept everything cold. Over the last few days it stated leaking water on the floor and inside the frig, I defrosted the freezer and put everything back in. The top part is freezing again but the bottom is 65+ degrees. I grabbed a cooler and tossed everything that was not bad, ugh we lost some $$ on that stuff. We had leftovers and all kinds of stuff I had to throw out, ohh it smelled sooo bad. I am so grateful for rubber gloves. Who ever invented those, gets a big smooch from me! Now I am off the clean the coils. Wish me luck, we really cannot get another one right now. I have no idea how we can function with just one, this will be quite a challenge if I cannot get it going again. I would love to catch a break seems like when it rains it pours. Have you dealt spoiled food and cleaning out a disaster before? Ever smelled rotten eggs before? I k now the picture is not of a broken refrigerator but it was soo cute! From pixabay

Yuck. I can imagine the mess. A newer, well functioning fridge might help lower electric bill.

oh yes i have had all that before. i know too i stay on the edge all the time wondering "what next" i once cleaned a clients fridge/ freezer part that had ice cream so old it was busted in there with gunk all over that area . only time i have ever seen that. they had meat in the back too that was black it was soooo old. some marked 5 yrs. And they were millionaires ! would you believe ? that old man was so tight. another time i cleaned their cabinets out because several cans of peaches had burst from age. so i know things can get old even if frozen or in cans hope you didn't have to get a new fridge

@bunnybon7 ours works extra hard because we have no A/C and it just cannot keep the food cool in the summer, to much work for it.

That sucks when the fridge goes out, I hope you can recoup it and bring it back to life for a little longer. I have smelt bad food before, we used to have a freezer in our garage once upon a time and we were on vacation when it went. Imagine that smell when we got home and opened the garage door, it was filled with meat and there was blood all over the place, it was God awful. Vacuum the back and underneath to get any dust and what not that has built up on the motor and fans so they don't have to work so hard.

I did just that and it seems to be working now. I just hope it keeps it up. I had to throw out a lot of stuff so not it is not nearly as full.

@mom210 My son works in appliances and he said the more you put in it the harder the motor has to work to keep it all cool, don't fill it too full and try to keep the food away from the sides and the vents in the refrigerator.

@cintol yes and it was very full, unfortunately we lost a lot of food, I guess that was the bright side, now it does not have to work so hard. Also we have no A/C and the house does get very hot, I know that does not help matters either.

it did and we have it hobbling along again. We should be okay until it warms up again and we will most likely have issues again.

Sometimes there are places in town that might help you replace this since you do have a large family. Sometimes churches will help also.

that is a good idea, we gave it another crutch and now that it is cooler, it should be okay until spring.

I'm happy to hear you got it going. I would be forced to get a new one...or call a machine fixer, we can't fix anything, it always take money because we know nothing about our kitchen machines...

that is why our foods placed in the fridge should be finished within 24 to 36 hours

@mom210 right on that. besides, foods that stay long in the fridge can be growing microorganisms that are susceptible to cold.
