I took this picture of my tallest balcony sunflower plant last night. It's over 5 feet tall now, and looks like it's ready to throw an actual sunflower!
The best sunflowers I've ever grown were with my kids at the mother-and-child drug rehab in Oakland a few years ago. Some topped seven feet, and we were able to harvest and roast the seeds.
This year, I have some going on my balcony, at the preschool, and (of course) at Kaiser, near the pharmacy. How long do you think it will be until I see yellow? I'm guessing only a few days.

Hi Colin. I am not a sunflower expert. But I like the progress it is making.

It sounds like it's getting there. I had some sunflower seeds one year..sadly they never grew..When I try to grow anything from seed..I always get a few sprouts and then they die..no luck with that..I have to start with a plant.

@TheHorse I always have them in a small container..anything I try to grow from seed never makes it out of the sprout stage.

I think you will because does not rain very often here, but when it does they sprout here in dry rive bed. Lots of them and is neat because did not even know they grew here. There is some funny plants that grow here when it does rain . I think humans are involved because no way there are plants that grow in a desert environment like that normally. I think people just throw their extra seeds about and eventually the plants grow. Its interesting and think I am the only one to notice stuff like that.

The sunflowers you planted are really good. I believe this one will produce seeds soon. I like sunflower seeds.

@caopaopao I haven't done it in a few years, though. For some reason, we had great sunflowers in the "ghetto" in Oakland CA. The kids and I harvested the seeds, and we baked them.

Maybe a week. So nice that you can grow sunflower on a balcony, I have trouble growing one in my garden. Several years ago at my last residence I grew several 7 ft sunflower plants in a small garden, I was never able to do that again.

@TheHorse I only changed homes to a different area in the city, But this yard is shadier than the last one so not sure if that is the reason.
