I am glad today is the longest of the year as it has been very busy for me. My welfare hearing was at noon, so I got some vital shopping in, including a dear friend's birthday card on my way to see my new welfare officer. He was a pleasant chap but he proved to be clueless. He insisted that I apply for a specific admin role he picked out for me from a job site. I didn't get to look at the details of the job until after I got to the community centre later in the day. The job specifies that applicants must be able to drive. I have no driving license. It also demands that the applicant must be a practicing Catholic, and able to prove it with references from a parish priest and a baptism certificate. As an ardent published atheist that might be tricky for me, as I spelt out in a message to the church school concerned. They are actually discriminating as the job itself is not remotely faith based. Back home I packed for my journey to Canterbury. As you may have seen, I presented reviews of all of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, which centre on a pilgrimage to Canterbury. Now it is my turn to make the same expedition, though by coach. I may be offline for much of the weekend after this post. I've added a Youtube of Procul Harem's Whiter Shade Of Pale as it refers to Chaucer's Miller's Tale. Arthur Chappell

Yes, I would say your welfare person was totally clueless about you. Even I wouldn't be able to apply for that job as I'm not in any way a Catholic, let alone a practicing one. If the job isn't even faith based, it shouldn't have that kind of requirement. Enjoy your pilgrimage to Canterbury.

I fully agree that their requirements are discriminatory, but I cannot understand why the welfare guy insisted that you apply for this job. This is a very nice song.

@LadyDuck yes, especially when welfare make the procedure of applying for it mandatory

@arthurchappell This is not the way to go. Workers waste time and the employers waste time too.

I worked a place before that helped people get jobs. They were sometimes clueless about me too. I was invited to go job hunting. I thought they would take me to the theater to get talk to the manager there. But they took me to a warehouse where you had to know how to work a forklift and I couldn't work the hours either.

Years ago I wrote a gag about applying for a vegetarian flatshare and having to supply references from a butcher to say they'd never served you. It seems that strange references aren't so unusual!

@asfarasiknow it is scary how we can make up a silly idea and end up giving prophesies that even Nostradamus would be impressed by

I wonder what he'll say when you point all the rubbish out to him? Have a great time in Canterbury.

Did you lose your driving license or you never had one? It is important that you do a job that you are comfortable with. I wonder why they have some specifications

@aureliah I never had a license - the job specs are what experience, qualifications and skills the employers need applicants to have. No point in asking to be a lifeguard if you can't swim. THe specs are handy as they let me decide quickly whether to apply for a job pr not
