For several days people in the US and many parts around the world have been watching events unfold at the US-Mexican border and the plight of children being separated from their parents. Many are questioning the rationality of the Trump administration's new policy of "Zero tolerance" regarding illegal border crossing. While no one is questioning the legality of Trump's latest official act, many have been protesting the moral callousness in how it is being carried out. Outrage reach tipping point when images and sound bites of frightened children crying and asking the whereabouts of their parents were broadcast in the media. Even hard-bitten commentators and newscasters became emotional when presenting the news. "This is not what America stands for" sums up what many outspoken U.S. critics are saying regarding the continuing heart-breaking story. Yet Trump and his officials not only remain indifferent to the situation of these children but also use deceit to cover up their deplorable activities and obvious incompetence. Despite the overwhelming majority of people who think this is morally wrong, what I find astonishing is the latest survey of Trump's approval ratings (87%) among his Republican fan base who continue to support their president. After Trump sign the order to halt the practice of separating children from their parents caught coming to the US illegally (due to the public outcry and political pressure from his own party members), he went to Duluth, Minnesota for a campaign rally. I was dumbstruck watching adoring and cheering fans as Trump's demagoguery continue whipping up the fervor of the crowd. One Trump official,Jeff Sessions quoted the Bible (“I would cite you to the Apostle Paul and his clear and wise command in Romans 13, to obey the laws of the government because God has ordained them for the purpose of order") to justify their action. Instead, he should have first considered common decency and compassion which humans are supposedly endowed by "God". Your thoughts...and feelings? Image: Pixabay

Immigrants come to Europe every day. They are received and put in special centers waiting for the decision about their destination. Of course illegal immigration is a crime, but I cannot believe that the United States have no places where to keep parents and kids together. This is what is wrong.

Apparently the new immigration policy was set in motion without providing the logistics needed. What worsen the situation was the evasiveness and outright lies the Trump administration was putting out.to the public.

@josie_ Exactly, you cannot make decision before being able to handle the situation. He wanted to prove to his supporters that he is doing what promised, keep the jobs for Americans. Do you believe that the average American would do some jobs that those poor people do for a few dollars a day?

@LadyDuck _Menial jobs tend to go to the less privilege of society. Despite the large influx of immigrants there are still thousands if not millions of job openings waiting to be filled in the US. A news article mention that the US military is being ask to provide housing facilities for up to 20,000 children. I hope Trump won't be asking soldiers to fill in as baby-sitters. What would happen if a foreign country like Canada suddenly decides to invade the US while soldiers are busy changing diapers?

Who on earth would want to break a family? Just too much pain. Let us see what Trump will do next.

Trump apparently began to care when people started to protest the inhumane treatment of children. I wonder if he can be sued for child abuse?

@mlgen1037 _Many would like to see him get impeach but the Mueller investigation regarding Russian collusion in the Trump presidential campaign seems to be moving at a snail pace. I don't think his incompetence at handling this immigration problem is grounds for an impeachment, but maybe a...psychological evaluation of his mental state?

Trump has never hidden his dislike of immigrants from "sh*thole" countries. But if you come from Norway...

Surely, they can implement their zero tolerance without separating that children from their parents, can't they?

Trump backtrack about not being able to do anything after the widespread protest against his immigration policy. Unfortunately it will take a long process and time to reunite these children with their parents.

I think this was one of those cases where procedure and the letter of the law took precedence over common sense and decency. Once someone has entered a country illegally they are a criminal. In this scenario they were treated as such and the adults taken to adult detention centres. Now, no country in the civilised world puts children in the same jails as adults, for obvious reasons. Hence the children ended up separated from their parents in child detention centres. The problem arises because illegal immigration is completely different from other sorts of crime. How many other crimes are committed by entire families, adults and their dependants?? None that I can think of. And it isn't as if the children will have had any say in the matter either. It therefore has to be treated as a special case. Surely it wasn't beyond the wit and resources of a country such as the USA to have places where families could be held together securely but in dignified surroundings without being separated. Maybe they thought this sort of thing would discourage others from trying. That doesn't work. People are dying almost daily in makeshift boats trying to get from North Africa to Europe. That doesn't deter others from trying. When people are desperate they will try anything and risk everything. Even their lives. That desperation shouldn't mean they are treated without respect and dignity.

The new immigration policy does not seem to differentiate between illegal immigrants and asylum-seekers. Regarding your comment that they should be treated with respect and dignity, one only have to look back at Trump's racial slurs concerning not only illegal migrants but immigrants who try to enter the US legally. We should also ask why these refugees are fleeing their country. Many problems like poverty, govt corruption, violence and the unequal distribution of wealth are the result of US meddling in south America ever since the Monroe Doctrine was formulated in the early 1800. This US foreign policy practically made countries in the region the exclusive enclave for US exploitation of their natural resources and advancement of US imperialism. The US has a long history of interferring in these countries political exercises, supporting military coups, running clandestine operation to overthrow legitimate governments and replacing them with dictators amenable to US interest.

Let us pray for those children...Mine is not related to the currently implemented policy but that feeling of a child LEFT BEHIND... my dad went to Guam wayback 1990s and that feeling of separation, growing up without both parents... it just hurts.... it DOES NOT disappear...

Children of young age are particularly vulnerable to the psychological ill-effects of being separated from parents. Their coping mechanism is fragile and options limited compare to that of an adult..The leaked audio tape to the media of separated children crying for their mothers made me teary eyed and angry at those who made this immigration policy.

They clearly letting everyone know they drew the line in the sand. This is not going to end well and still no one has ever gave a good reason of why they voted for Trump. The best I got is to stick it to the man. Except, Trump is the man we have all been trying to expose and they elected him expecting him to do what exactly?. Corrupt a nation that was already falling to corruption apparently. Rome, think we will be joining you in the history books.

Trump has manage to exploit his supporter's fear of immigrants stealing their jobs, He has also fueled their insecurity of losing their social dominance as more people from different races continue to add to the cultural diversity of the US. Trump's racist rhetoric appeal to his fans just like during Nazi-Germany when Hitler was advocating for a "pure" Aryan race society.
