I haven't been wasting my time

We left home on May 10, taking our car and caravan across Australia then catching a ferry down to Tasmania. Next Monday we’ll catch the ferry back to Melbourne then start the journey back towards the west. We’ve had an interesting time and seen some wonderful sights but I have also done some ‘work’ along the way. I bought some cheap wool at a discount store and have been making beanies for children Vince will take them to Nepal in October to hand out to village children along with some clothing that he’ll take over. I bought a few more balls at a thrift shop today and will have at least 20 beanies made by the time we get back home. I still have all the ends to sew in but that will only take me an evening.

Oh,what a nice hobby you have there. Have you tried making a sweater with that craft of yours?

I used to do a lot of crochet for a craft shop but I now just do a bit here and there.

Those are cute Judy. How much I would love to give Vince toys to bring to those children. We have two big boxes full of toys found in the apartment of my mother, they are like new.

@JudyEv I am going to donate to the refugees centers, the poor kids who come from Syria and other war zones have lost everything.

@LadyDuck That would be a very worthwhile cause. It must be devastating for such refugees.

The children over there have so little. I'm sure they would love to have some toys. I hope you find some worthy charity to donate them too.

That is wonderful. Another place that they are appreciated is cancer treatment sites. Women especially like them when the hair starts falling out. I have thought of doing that this winter and donating in Moms name, but I need to get a lot better at knitting first.

@JudyEv Yes Mom crocheted but I never got the hang of it too good. Have been learning slowly to knit some. Mostly cheating and using looms.

@wolfgirl569 I don't have a loom but they look pretty interesting. I'm tempted to get one.

These are crocheted which 'grows' a lot quicker than knitting.

I don't think they would fit you - but I could always make a bigger one. What colour would you like?

That is so sweet. It is very relaxing to crochet. I wish I took more time to learn it but the computer and books Interest me so much more.

@JudyEv I have to have a book with me at all times. If I have 30 seconds to spare my nose will be in a book instead of sitting idle.

I only crochet at odd moments. I have a book and the crochet in the car with me at the moment so I'm not sitting getting impatient if I have to wait for whatever.

@JudyEv You remind me of someone that I was close to once that would do these kind of things without even having to look. She would do shawls and they were so beautiful that some of her friends still have and wear them decades later.

@JudyEv I am no good at anything that involves a needle. I started knitting a sweater for my mother and I got rid of it after years of hibernation. It was half knitted.

@allknowing There are many people who have half-knitted jumpers in the backs of cupboards so you're not alone in that.

They are easy for me to do so it's not like it's a real chore. Mostly I can easily make one a day. Crochet is much faster than knitting.

Nice! I wish I can do that and make good use of time when just waiting around. But crochet doesn't seem to like me. When I tried it before, it would be ok at first but will eventually look bad and loose. I must have been doing something wrong. Knitting liked me better, but 1 needle seems better and more manageable than 2 needles when waiting in line somewhere. Hehehe.

A ball of wool and a hook take very little room as you say. Crochet 'grows' a lot faster than knitting too.

A ball of wool and a crochet hook take very little room so it's an easy thing to cart around. I've mixed and matched the colours a bit so they're not all the same.

We've involved in a very small charity which installs wells in small villages. He is going with a few others of the group to have a look at the wells and perhaps do a bit of work in a couple of schools. He is going in October.

@JudyEv I'm sure it must be because you never know what one would like and how they live but I am sure they will love your hats. Children who don't have much appreciate things much more than the ones who have everything
