AM & PM mean the same everywhere right?

Perth, Australia
June 22, 2018 9:56pm CST
Someone on Facebook, who lives in India just told me that it is "8pm in the morning" there. I said "You mean AM." He kept telling me that AM was night and PM was day. I thought AM and PM meant the same thing everywhere? I kept explaining to him what AM and PM meant but he still tells me the opposite of what I'm saying. What's AM and PM to you?

in that situation, my curiosity would take over instead. i'll ask him who taught him it's that way, or where did he learn it that way.

@hereandthere That's a good point. I didn't ask him where you learned that. He just kept telling me that that's how it was in India. Then I gave up trying to explain it to him.

They are the same everywhere, although PM also means "Prime Minister" in my Country.

You're actually right about AM and PM. Maybe the person was absent from should when the meaning of those was thought.

@Shavkat Well the thing we were discussing didn't really need one. As he and I were making ourselves very clear anyway. We both understood what we meant but he just didn't understand that AM meant morning and PM meant afternoon - night.

AM means "ante meridiem" PM "post meridiem", this is Latin, ante meridiem means "before noon", post meridiem "after noon". There is no possible confusion. The one who told you that AM is night is an ignorant.

We sleep most of the AM and are awake most of the PM so perhaps that is why to him AM is night and PM is day. But I think that any country that uses AM / PM and not military time uses it the same way.

@Hannihar That's what I think I thought at the time too though, I've met a few more people here and there who thought the same thing. They were also from the same place where the first guy was so I wondered if things were different elsewhere.
