Play it Again, Sam #12a - "Time After Time"

As much goth/punk/post punk that I play here in my music series', you might be surprised to find out that I do, in fact, have a soft side, even though I do keep it under the surface. We are at #12a, the "original" portion of today's Play it Again, Sam, a two part discussion consisting of an original song followed by a cover of that song: "Time After Time" by Cyndi Lauper. On her 1983 debut album, She's So Unusual, Cyndi Lauper was mostly backed by then-up and coming Philadelphia band The Hooters (they were the first band to hit the stage at Live Aid.) With much of that album already written and recorded, producer Rick Chertoff decided that one more song was needed, so Lauper and Hooters vocalist Rob Hyman sat down at a piano and hashed out a lovely little love ballad, "Time After Time." As Cyndi has said, she got "Time After Time" from TV Guide, and used it as a working title, never intending to keep it as a part of the song, but could not find a way to cut it out of the tune without ruining it. "Time After Time" turned out so well that Chertoff wanted to release it as Lauper's debut single, but she resisted, fearing that the record buying public might pigeonhole her as a balladress and take the more upbeat material on the album less seriously (hence, "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" was the first single, and our introduction to the unique singer.) "Time After Time" hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 (as well as on their Adult Contemporary chart,) and in Canada, too. It stalled at #54 in the UK, but was rereleased again later that year, when the Brits took it to #3. The song also featured prominently in a hilarious episode of the television series, My Name is Earl, in which Earl's brother Randy falls in love with a crazy cat lady. Stay tuned! Wrestler Captain Lou Albano, who appeared in the "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" video, played a cook at a diner in this one. Albano was a great villain as a wrestler and one of my favorites as a kid.

Didn't she act as his "manager" for awhile, even appearing at a WrestleMania and getting involved in the action? I seem to remember that. I do remember her talking about him one night on Letterman. By the way, I saw her in concert about 12 years or so ago. She's really fun, other than the fact that she feels the need to give a lengthy story about each song before performing it.

@teamfreak16 Ah.... Less talking more singing. And you are right about the WestleMania stuff Albano was some character. Wrestling before Vince Mc Mahon Jr. turned it into total entertainment.

@dgobucks226 - Those were the days. I used to get up every Saturday morning just to watch Chief Wahoo McDaniels wrestle on TV.

They did seem to play it in the roller rinks a lot back in the 80's!

@teamfreak16 I did it about 8 or 10 times growing up as a kid. Never did get the hang of it but never really wiped out either.

@NJChicaa - I taught myself as a young teenager just to give me something to do besides skateboarding all day. I went to the rink a lot when we first moved to Colorado Springs, because it was something to do since I hadn't really met anyone at that point. I did get a couple of dates out of it!

Definitely one of the best 80's ballads, as far as I'm concerned. A big hit for her.

This is a great song. It's interesting to learn about how they choose or don't choose particular songs as singles or whatever.

@teamfreak16 It's sounds a bit like authors. I'm not sure they have too much say sometimes either.

Usually, the record company and the producer choose the singles, often to the chagrin of the band or artist. But every once in awhile, they do actually listen to the band.
