Play it Again, Sam #12b - "Time After Time"

We're keeping it mellow, really mellow, on today's Play it Again, Sam. We are at #12b, the "cover" portion: Miles Davis' cover of Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time." I would say that by the 1980's, jazz legend Miles Davis could do whatever the hell he wanted, but as a trailblazer, Miles pretty much had done whatever he felt like his entire career. As Quincy Jones put it in the liner notes of Davis' final studio album, Doo Bop, the man "re-invented jazz five times." So, on his very good, highly political, 1985 album, You're Under Arrest (for one song, Davis asked to meet Sting, asked the Police vocalist if he spoke French, then had Sting translate the Miranda Rights into French and yell it into a microphone,) Miles tossed in a couple of pretty pop music covers, Michael Jackson's "Human Nature," and Lauper's "Time After Time." His choice of "Time After Time" might seem a little odd at first, but Miles Davis had an ear for music. He once said something along the lines of "music is music, no matter what kind of music. If it's good, it's good." Using that train of thought, Davis stayed fairly true to Lauper's lovely ballad, but turned it into a beautiful piece of 80's jazz. (Info verified by Wikipedia)

I totally agree with 'if it's good, it's good'. I like this version.

Exactly. It's why I like so much different stuff. If it's good, I don't really care what genre it is!

Cyndi Lauper? Or this version by Miles Davis? Or both? They are both great!

@aureliah - I always liked her. I saw her in concert back in the mid-2000's.

@teamfreak16 I listened to it and it sooo much better than MJ's vocal. Great cover, thanks for suggesting.

If you have the time, check out his cover of "Human Nature." It's also really good.

I missed this one too and will check it out. The older song with this same title was recorded well by Tony Bennett, Sinatra and so many more. Another great ballad.

I hope that you like it when you check it out. It's Miles, so how can it be bad?

Yeah, and it actually became a concert staple for him, and he wasn't exactly known for liking to play anything that wasn't forward-thinking.
