How many cars does one man need?

We caught up with an old friend of Vince’s in Hobart, Tasmania and he was kind enough to allow us to park our van in his backyard thus saving several days’ worth of caravan park fees. We sort of paid in other ways but I’ll write about that separately. Vince’s friend has always been very keen on cars and his backyard reflects his interest.
He and his family live on five acres and luckily they are mostly hidden from the view of the public and neighbours as most of the property is taken up with wrecks and part-wrecks of cars of various makes. He particularly likes the more expensive models. I didn’t like to ask if he was going to restore these but he sure has a lot of them. Do you know someone who collects cars in this way but doesn’t seem to do anything with them?

I once met a family that had not much money. But all the men in the family were into mechanics and they used whatever extra money they had to buy old cars. If they had restored them, they could have gotten a good amount of money. But they did not do that so they were mostly car hoarders.

@JudyEv It could turn into good money if they fixed and sold them.

I don't know anyone except the man at our local garage, who collects cars to see if he can spruce them up and sell them. He isn't always successful but he also produces some real beauties. I think it must be a really satisfying thing to be able to do that.

One of my male relatives likes to collect old cars for parts. Problem is, he ends up with about 5 cars (old) in his garages and front and backyard. He loves to spend times playing around with them, but he hardly finds the time since he works hard during the week. His wife is not happy though (with the ugly cars scattering everywhere).

Well, it's their habit and what he wants anyways.

I can't say that I know anyone who collects and stores cars. I do have a friend who buys old vehicles and then restores them to their former like-new condition, but he generally only does one car at a time.

@JudyEv But all that wealth sitting in his yard isn't worth much until such time as he fixes up those vehicles and restores them to their original condition. That's when the true wealth shines through!

@moffittjc That's true. They are worth nothing until he sells one - or some.

@amitkokiladitya He seems to have the knack of picking them up quite cheaply here and there.

No, I don't! The one person I knew who collected them did it in part to make money and have things to restore.
Like he'd buy a good deal and sell it by parts/ use what they needed. Often having a few "babies" to work on at a time since some things are hard to get!

That's a good way to make a few extra dollars out of what is virtually a hobby. But this person doesn't seem to be working on any of them.

@JudyEv Some people are so passionate about things that financial limitation does not bother them.

Yes at one time my uncle did. But he did work on peoples cars at home and often was able to save them money by taking parts off the junkers he had

@wolfgirl569 I think so. I guess it's like most collections - except that they do take up a lot of room.

Not cars but I guess he is like any other person who collects "Things" they really have no use for. Why do I need a few hundred salt and pepper shakers? It started with one and I can't explain the attraction.

@JudyEv Too much available space, acreage, might be an incentive. After all you have to put these monsters somewhere.

@Freelanzer Any collection takes up space but shakers sound pretty reasonable size-wise.
