Have You Ever Done Something and Found Later it Had a Name? De-Cluttering Can Also be Termed Death Cleaning

A customer of our store was talking about death cleaning. I had to ask what in the world she was talking about and basically it's getting rid of what you're not currently using that is stored in the basement, in extra rooms of your home or even in storage facilities and not only getting rid of it as a goal, but doing it now rather than saving it for later. Most of us will keep putting it off especially when we don't see it every day. I did windows for someone recently and they had a lovely home, but sight-unseen to most eyes, they had several bedrooms that were loaded with extras. Possibly it was storing items to use in an upcoming party, but I'm guessing that most of it had been there a very long time. That showed me that even those with more money than I currently have, also don't manage their things very well. For me in the past, I've saved things just in case. Mostly because I knew I didn't have the extra funds to buy new if something was needed later on. For the most part, I've not stored furniture, but I have saved a lamp or two in my life. I did begin working on extraneous things that I wasn't using or hadn't used in a long time. I've put a hold on that, though, until after I get my second knee replaced which is on hold at present until the wound on my ankle finishes healing. I also may now have a stress fracture on that same foot from when I lift my weight off the ankle when it hurts. I'm getting that check out in an hour. I'm guessing I will be wearing a boot cam for six to eight weeks. By then the would should be long gone and maybe I can swap a later surgery patient with my own next month and not have to wait overlong for this. I did look up the term, but won't link anything here. You can google 'Death Cleaning' yourself. Someone wrote about it and others have jumped on the band wagon. Why make your children have to go through your things? You can find out now if there's anything in particular that they want and give it to them unless you're still using it. Any ideas?

It sounds better but may not be as involved as getting rid of things so our kids don't need to take time out of their busy lives to do it for us once we're gone.

Since I don't have kids I really have no other reason than just me to declutter @MarshaMusselman

@rebelann I also don't want strangers going through my things and making wrong assumptions or judgements. Did you have siblings arrive that would have that job instead, Ann?

Hi Marsha. I understand declutter is removing unnecessary things to make the place look cleaner and be ablento “breathe”. Removing things that are not needed. Once in a while I do that.

You're still young. We attended to accumulate more as we get older even if that wasn't our plan. I was able to go through things more often when I was younger but I'm working more jobs and more hours now that my girls are grown and have less time to work on these projects like I'd like.

@MarshaMusselman That is right, Marsha. I am working from home, so I get the chance to clean. You are working more now?

That strikes me as weird because I get this urge to declutter every so often and I have had thoughts of getting rid of things so the kids don't have to deal with them. I have given them things, too, if I know they want it. I know I won't live forever, but now I wonder about my cleaning urges...

@MarshaMusselman My kids don't want most of my stuff, but now and then one will say something about it. I made my will and there is a place to list things for each one, so I asked them if they wanted anything. It started a conversation about it anyway.

That's how I've felt these past few years although my kids don't want any of my things yet. I see nothing wound work your wanting to get rid of the extras before needed. I just wish I considered doing this even more years back when I wasn't working so much.

The name though sombre sort of is quite apt. I really wish your leg problems get well soon. Are you co running the physiotherapy you were doing?
