How to Leave a Tip for the Hotel Housekeeper

Surprisingly, it does matter. Where you leave the tip is as important as giving a tip. If the housekeeper has to question whether or not money left is a tip they won't touch it. If you have money laying around the room, it's even more confusing. You should put money not meant as a tip away. I go into rooms where there's cash all over the place. Leave the tip where there is no doubt that it is meant for the housekeeper. Don't put it near your belonging. You can write a note, put it by the name card (if there is one) or leave it on the bed. A thank you note is a nice gesture, but without a tip, it's worthless. Food is NOT a tip. Would you go to a restaurant and leave the waiter a thank you note or a piece of pie you didn't eat? No, you wouldn't. And before you go on with "the waiter only makes blah blah an hour", you aren't tipping according to how much the person makes, you are tipping for the service. Be sure to leave the tip for every day you receive service. Waiting until you check out and then tipping means the person who cleaned your room the most may not see any of that money. Housekeepers don't share tips, despite what you may think. Don't leave it at the front desk, not everyone is honest. How much you leave is up to you. I've received anywhere from a dollar to twenty dollars.

They could always just hand the money to the person who should receive it, that takes the guess work out.

Sometimes, but I've been handed money for rooms that aren't mine. I do make sure it gets to the right person, but not everyone is honest.

I like this post, it is very informative. I had not thought about different housekeepers different days. I never leave money laying around, unless it is for a tip. I think I either put it on a night stand or on the vanity counter, though.

I find cash in rooms all the time. Wallets, change, etc.

I never leave cash around when going to motel rooms. I always put it in my wallet and take it with me wherever I go. I didn't even know you could leave tips for the housekeepers as we never do.

Yes, tipping the housekeeper is a thing and the housekeeper appreciates it. You'd be surprised how often I find wallets with cash sticking out of them in rooms.

I generally tip waitstaff 20%, but that still depends on the level of service. Again, for me, I consider a clean room to be part of my room rate. That's just me. But I DO tip if I have an extended stay.

We sometimes have guest who stay for long periods of time. Some do tip, some don't. The messier ones tend not to and they want service every day. The ones that do tip tend to only want service once a week or so. I agree with you on the waitstaff. The better service I get, the more the tip. I don't base it on how much they make an hour, but rather the service.

@irishidid Yes. In the case of a restaurant service is everything. If it's not there, it reflects in their tip and vice versa.
