A night at the Ballet

We had originally booked to go to the Faberge museum after our day tour but we were informed two weeks before we were due to go that the museum would be closed due to the building being taken over for an economic summit. Our second choice was available if we wanted to go to see the ballet so we jumped at the chance. The venue for the night was the Alexandrinsky Theatre which was built for the Imperial troupe to perform which was established by Empress Elizabeth Petrovna in 1756 in St. Petersburg. It opened its doors in 1832 and was named after Tzarina Alexandra Fyodorovna. It is quite a majestic looking building with columns at the front of it.It is the oldest theatre in Russia. The ballet we watched was Swan lake. It was divided into three scenes and started dead on 8PM. We were so fortunate as we were given front row seats so we had a fantastic view of the stage and the leg work of the ballerina's. The orchestra pit was right in front of us it was interesting to watch the very talented musicians performing and the dancers dancing to the music. The stage set was superb. The decor inside is quite ostentatious with lots of red and gold in the great auditorium. The acoustics were fantastic in the hall. The dancing was absolutely superb despite the fact that it did not end until 11PM we were too excited to even think about tiredness as we had been on the go since 5 AM. Was it worth it. Oh boy was it just. I would have loved to have done it all again the very next day. The photo is of the performers taking their final curtain call.

@BelleStarr Swan lake was entertaining from the beginning to the end. I refuse to pay London prices now as it is so expensive and the seating is so uncomfortable in these old theatres. I much prefer to go to the theatre in the suburbs. It is so much cheaper and far more comfortable.

It was amazing. I also like some Classical Indian dances not really the Bollywood type although that is quite well choreographed with beautiful settings in the background!

I have read about this Ballet and the troupe did arrive in India a few years ago but missed watching them. Nothing like watching it where it belongs.

The oldest theater in Russia, this is something memorable ! May I be indiscreet and ask you the price you paid for your seat ? A front row seat in Paris is an average 150 Euros for a ballet.

How very fortunate you got to experience this - we don't have Auditoriums like this in SA and therefore many of the attributes to make a good ballet are lost. I have seen the Russian Ballet in SA and Swan Lake in particular, maybe with different ballet dancers, but they definitely are the superior dancers of the world

It was a toss up between the Faberge and the theatre. Faberge won but then lost but the Ballet was superb as well so not really that disappointing. It left me glowing as it was so beautiful.

@garymarsh6 I saw my first live stage show with a high school group and I can still remember being blown away but the whole 'thing' - lighting, a stage that moved, 'real' people - incredible stuff to a small-town country bumpkin.

How wonderful that sounds Gary. I've only been to one ballet in my life and that was Swan Lake too. It helps that the music is familiar. So glad that you got the opportunity to see it.

Excellent I do like the theatre but in London the tickets are very expensive and the seats so uncomfortable. I now am boycotting the theatres in London and will go to the suburban theatres which put on productions and are not only cheaper but more comfortable.

They were perfect. My niece is trained in classical Indian dancing. We saw her perform in London which was filmed by the BBC in front of the Mauritian Ambassador. She was stunning and so beautiful.
