Ten Million Dollars that I Never Knew I Had!

Apparently, I have inherited (or was due a contract payment of - the letter isn't clear which) $10.5 million. It seems that the "United Nations Secretary General António Guterres and the Vice President Federal Republic of Nigeria" have "Mandated the First City Monument Bank (FCMB) to pay all Foreign Contractors, Inheritance and victims of scam with genuine claims their funds" and it seems that I am among the "listed beneficiaries". Mr Peter Obaseki, who signs himself as the "Managing Director (FMCB)", even though that title doesn't exist and he is actually the "Chief Operating Officer", wants to send me an ATM card loaded with the lovely lolly which can be "used in any ATM machine all over the world or you can as well go to your bank to off-load the funds to your account once the ATM CARD is receive." (He clearly didn't do all that well in his English classes at school, even though he holds a B.Sc and M.Sc in Computer Science as well as an MBA in Finance from the University of Lagos.) Sadly, there is only one catch. He wants me to pay him an (unspecified) delivery fee plus VAT and to re-confirm my full name, address, phone numbers and age/sex, even though he addresses me as "Beneficiary", which is an odd Christian name and not mine. Also he asks me to reply to 'senatepresidentoffice17' at Yahoo. com. You really would think that they'd have their own email domain name, wouldn't you? Do you think I should send him the information and ask how much the "delivery fee" is? It can't be much, can it, to send an ATM card through the post. And, when I get this $10 million which I didn't know I had, what should I do with it? Do you think I could buy myLot and become King of myLot or should I just go for a ouija board and a case or two of whisky?

Oh, I love those letters, emails and phone calls such as this. I get them often. I am swimming in money I never knew I had. I vote for the whisky.

@Shellyann36 Sadly, a few do and that is why the scammers keep doing it.

Send me $5 (for handling) together with your street address and I'll email you a scan of the label together with a (fake) Tracking Number and link (to a 'welcome' page that steals allyour personal details) so you can see the progress of your order!

@owlwings The bad part about it is that some people fall for it.

@owlwings It is worth a try. Giving mylot a whole new look. But why sad?

@mlgen1037 Sad? Oh I see! Perhaps I was thinking that there should have been more hoops to jump through; maybe it was because I know I don't have the necessary to get the ATM card sent to me. Actually, I should have either written "Sadly, there is a catch ..."

Obviously, that's a scam indeed. But I will be so happy if it is true and you will make MyLot pay us more for every like , post and comment we receive. You are not alone for receiving something like that. I have been e-mailed in our office e-mail (I wonder how he got my email address). It says that I am a beneficiary of a dying African woman, and it was her caregiver who e-mailed me complete with a picture of the dying woman. I deleted it after I have read a part of it.

They try it on everyone they can. The email addresses they use are sometimes randomly generated but sometimes they are collected from things that you might have signed up for or subscribed to and either the database of the company you subscribed to was hacked and the email addresses stolen or the email addresses collected have been sold in bulk. There are so many ways of getting a person's email, it's impossible to list them all!

King of anywhere might be a nice option. Me, I'd just dine out for the rest of my life.

I don't have any pretentions to royalty or a Divine Right to anything and I think that being king of anything would be more responsibilty than I need at the moment. I do sort of envy this guy, though:

It rather depends what he wants to deliver the money. I would have to insist that he could only smell the ink on my cheque until I actually had the money in my bank!

So did you send him the information ? Who wouldn't want to claim their 10 million dollars ?! I can't believe they (whomever "they" are) are still pulling this stuff. You'd think people can't possibly fall for it these days, but ugh, there must be victims out there.

There must be victims, and enough to make it worthwhile doing, otherwise I don't think that people would still send out this sort of email. Sad, Very.

I don't know where this one actually came from - it could have been from anywhere. Yes, I opened the email (but I have a good AV program and I always block images and attachments). Of course, I sent it straight to the spam folder as soon as I'd had a good laugh!

@owlwings They talk in millions and any sensible person will know that it is spam. Just for those small initial payments they expect to receive, they do this.

I think you should play with him. Call his bluff. Don't send any fee until you receive the card...or so you want him to believe. Also, tell him you want a copy of "The. Signatured Will" or whatever documentation has you named a 'beneficiary'. Bring him to his knees in any way you can, at least until the police arrive at his door.

I'd love to do that but I really don't have the time. Of course, the longer you can spin things out, the more annoyed they can get (and that's a plus) and the better chance one has of catching them.

Oh It is just a small fee of 2500 dollars or something. I have done this and I think the jerks kept the 10 million they said was mine also or else I would have bought Mylot a long time ago.
