Rainwater

I suppose today will just be a day of discussions from me. I didn't intend to write so many today but I wanted to write this one for sure. I just finished reading Rainwater by Sandra Brown. It's a book I have read before and it's even one I've talked about here before. The last time I talked about it I was only half remembering the book. Since I just finished the book again I thought I'd give a better idea of what it's about. Rainwater is not just the name of the book but also the last name of one of the characters. He is a man who comes to live in a boardinghouse that belongs to a woman whose husband deserted her. This book takes place in the early 30's. It talks about the struggle with her boy (I won't spoil it but he has a disorder that is more commonly known today than it was back then), the racial divide between the African Americans and the Whites and of the injustices of that. The circumstances of Mr. Rainwater's residence at her home is a bit of a sad one but a little bit of light comes from his living there. He sacrifices himself for the sake of Ella (the boardinghouse lady)'s son. There's another little part I won't spoil - it happens at the very end. I recommend you read this but I also recommend you have a box of tissues for the very end of the book. I won't be reading this again for a long while yet. I can't really explain how real this book felt to me.
Ella Barron, a single Texas mother, built a careful life running a boarding house in the Depression-era cotton South. But when a mysterio...

I have read this book now and I loved it. It was sad, it was happy, and it was very moving. I hated to have to put it down and I hated that it ended. I would definitely recommend this book to everyone. It wasn't just a love story either, but it was a great love story. I love the time period it is set in as well.

I am really glad that you liked it. What did you think to the revelation at the very end? Did you expect the man from the prologue to be the little boy featured throughout the story?

@morgoodie I didn't naturally think that the Boy was different than the man because Autism is a spectrum, there are different levels of ability and behavior. I don't know that much about it, but I thought it was possible for the boy to become verbal. If they made this into a movie I would be sure to buy it on DVD. I will probably look into more of her books myself but not sure when. Tomorrow I'll be going off to sell more DVDs and buy a few books with my vouchers while I am there. I saw one on Irish Folklore that I wanted to get. It was only $10.00 and I hope it's still there and that I can find it.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I did and I didn't because of the boy in the story having autism and that just didn't coincide with the man telling the story. I didn't think of her having another child with Rainwater. I think I fell in love with Rainwater too. This would be a great movie if they followed the book closely. I want to read her other books now even though they are different than this one. She seems like a good writer though. It is a sad but beautiful story.

I have a Sandra Brown book in my house that I got years ago but haven't read yet. I've even entered giveaways for a lot of her books, yet I have never read her books. I'm going to put this one on my "want to read" list on Goodreads. Sounds good.

I bought another one of her books a week ago. The shop I go to has a lot of her books. She did say in the book that "Rainwater" was unlike any of her other books. It was such a good book that just thinking of it now makes me feel equal parts happy and sad.

@rakski Yes. I like reading about the 1930's and 1940's. This book is a good one but the last chapter and the epilogue is a bit emotional.

This is the only book of hers that I've read. Her name does have that "familiar" sound to it.

The author's acknowledgements note that this isnt' her normal style of writing. I haven't read anything else by her. I'm still reeling a bit form the ending though the closer I got to it the more I remembered. I feel a little as if I've lost a good friend.

I really like Sandra Brown. Her books are addictive and the nice combination between mystery, drama and romance! I have not read this one though. Ill keep an eye open for it!

This one is supposedly different than any other she has written. Atleast according to her. I've not read any of her other books but this one is just amazing.

I certainly love to read. This book reminded me of another book that I need to repurchase. I gave away or sold off a lot of my books a few years ago. I've been using my kindle but I want to re-buy some books that I will read over and over again.

I wait quite awhile before I read it again because I am so easily immersed in the story and the ending is bittersweet.
