Do You Know Your State Bird?

For some reason I always remembered to this day the state bird of my Mother's state, who was born in North Carolina (U.S.) I first noticed the state bird and flower symbols (which I also remember), on a plate in a souvenier shop, going back to my teenage years, when I visited my Mom's relatives there. But if you asked me what the state bird of New Jersey (U.S.) is, I have no clue. So, that got me to thinking....how many of you know your state bird without looking it up? A state’s official bird is generally native to the region and a frequent sighting within the borders. Birds also don't have to be unique to a state. Actually some states share the same state bird as its mascot. Additional Information- Wikipedia Photo- pinterest.com

NJ is the goldfinch. I have never seen one around here though. I have seen a ton of them in NC at my in-laws' house.

I have seen many finches at my birdfeeder. Mostly the house finch. I have seen gold finches from time to time. I hang suet which attracts many bird species. The gold finch loves the sunflower seeds I put out.

@dgobucks226 We never put bird feeders out because we had 2 cats that went outside. They are gone now which is evident with all of the chipmunks in the yard.

@myklj999 Nice photo JJ! I like your feeder too! I've got many of the red chested house finches. Get the occasional gold too. I have Suet sock dangling from the feeder they will hang onto when eating.

@Elizaby Maybe we should tell Jeff before that bird gets to mocking him, lol. Thanks for your response Mary. This bird is not big on feeders, but you might find them hoping around on your lawn. They also learn up to 200 different bird sounds throughout their lifetime. Now that's mocking

My state bird is the Robin and the flower is the violet. No looking it up, I promise. I've always known what those are. There are a lot of other things state related as well, like songs and state dance, and such and so forth.

@just4him According to Wikipedia here is the regions where Robins are found. The American robin is widely distributed throughout North America, wintering from southern Canada to central Mexico and along the Pacific Coast. It is the state bird of Connecticut, Michigan, and Wisconsin. So, we can safely say Robins do get around

Ah, the Robin. Both an abundant and popular bird found throughout many states. According to all about birds the Robin has doubled in population in the Northeast and Far North. I noticed myself, that many arrived in my backyard in NJ, much sooner this year. Seems they are sticking around up north for longer periods of time.

New Jersey's is the American Goldfinch. Fun fact- Ruffed Grouse can digest bitter, often toxic plants that many birds can’t handle.

@dgobucks226 Not sure but a good question. We have birds that go away in winter and come back in the nice weather but do not know their names. I think a lion statue is really cool to represent Jeursalem.

It's actually funny to me that I lived in Wisconsin and do not know their state bird, but I have always known the state bird of Illinois is the cardinal. In fact, it is the ONLY state bird I know of. Maybe I need to do some homework.

According to another Wisconsin native it is the Robin. I like the Cardinal. Seven states claim it as their state bird. Why not, it's a beautiful looking bird
