We only have ten editions to go, but at this pace, Play it Again, Sam could very well come limping into the finish six months from now. However, I have some motivation tonight, so let's go high energy! As always, Play it Again, Sam is a two part discussion consisting of an original song followed by a cover of that song. We are at #10a, the "original:" "Higher Ground" by Stevie Wonder. From his classic 1973 album, Innervisions, "Higher Ground" is some of the best work from Stevie Wonder's funk period (my favorite Stevie era.) This classic tune was written and recorded by Wonder in three hours during a self-proclaimed "burst of creativity" (I once read that the man often spent days at a time in the studio, working non-stop, sometimes eating maybe an orange, if anything at all, the entire time. Impressive, but three hours is nothing!) The song was written about reincarnation, something Wonder was on record as saying is something that he believes in. It did quite well as a single, charting in a total of seven countries, including #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 (and #1 on that magazine's Hot R&B Singles chart,) and #9 in Canada. Face it. Stevie Wonder is a national treasure. "Higher Ground" is just one of many reasons why, but a very big reason nonetheless. You more than likely know where this is headed, but, stay tuned! During his 1974 European Tour Stevie Wonder did a live performance on The Beat Club, Here's "Higher Ground" from INNERVISIONS. On that album Stevie Wonder pl...

A song about second chances is just what Stevie got three months later when his car was involved in an accident that put him in a coma. Fortunately the head injury was not fatal and we were able to listen to more of Stevie's artistry in years ahead

Stevie Wonder is the total package in terms of musical art forms. Even though I do not agree with his politics. I like his song "Another Star" due to the drum beat that song has.

@teamfreak16 The reason I remember "Another Star" was because I was ready to leave Panama in early 1978 since my late dad from his work with the U S Government and the drum beats of that song reminded of the palm trees in the Canal Zone and the beaches.

@Deepizzaguy - I'll have to give it a listen from that point of view. I spent two weeks in Panama, at Fort Sherman, on the Atlantic side of the Canal Zone.

That's a good one. I prefer his 70's era funk stuff best, but it's all great.
