Do bad experiences stay with you for life?

I am a nervous driver and only drive if I have to. If I can get someone else to take me places then I would rather do that. I was telling another member this and she asked me if I had ever been in an accident. I was in a serious car accident at the age of 17 where the driver rolled the car which was a soft top. Fortunately most of us came out with cuts and bruises but it was a scary experience. I don't think about it now but I wonder if it has anything to do with the way I am about driving? Do bad experiences in life stay at the back of our minds even if we are not aware of it? Are you scared of doing certain things because something that happened way back has made you anxious?

Bad experience in life stay forever, this is sure. I do not like to drive, but I have never been in a serious accident. My parents were, but I was not with them when it happened.

I don't know if it is the accident that has made me this way. I don't consciously think about it when I am in the car.

@sprite1950 Sometimes it is the sub-conscious but may be you simply do not like to drive. I know that this is something I really dislike.

@LadyDuck I often get my partner to drive my car just to keep it ticking over as sometimes I don't drive it for a week or more.

Oh, yes, bad experiences can affect us in different ways for the rest of our lives. This even has a name, Sprite... It's called Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD. I've read documentation which states that even when someone believes they were not affected by a traumatic event, the doctors could still pinpoint specific activities the person took to avoid something that reminded him of the previous event. I was once burned by acid which came out of an automatic flush valve at a job I once had. Every time I heard the sound of the valve opening after that I jumped and dodged like acid was going to land on me again. I finally quit that job because I couldn't stop jumping and dodging when I heard the sound.

That does sound terrifying. Did it scar you at all? Acid can leave such terrible injuries on the skin.

@DaddyEvil Well I would say you were lucky but that doesn't seem appropriate. I'm glad it was no worse for you.

@sprite1950 I got most of the acid off quickly and neutralized what was left soon enough that I ended up losing several inches of skin on one forearm, but only have one small knotted scar to show for it. Right arm in the outside crease of my elbow.

I think you are right even if we don't think about them that often.

@sprite1950 dEfinitely, Most traumas we want to forget no matter how mild. Sometimes we thought we have forgotten but once we are scarred, it remains.

@toniganzon Yes I think you may be right. I wonder where my fear of heights comes from though .. maybe from a previous life!

Thank god i have never had a serious car accident, I do believe that traumatic experiences in our lives mark us forever and for sure you are now afraid of driving due to that accident.

@sprite1950 I read that our brain handles positive and negative information in different hemispheres, negative emotions generally involve more thinking and the information is processed more thoroughly than positive ones. It is just our brain trying to protect us

It's obviously at the back of his mind. Perhaps it stays as a reminder to be more careful.

Some of my bad experience creeps up on me that happened long ago. When it does I pray about it and give all of it to God, to help me with it. Then I'd feel calm. I'm a Senior Citizen, and had some very upsetting things happen, so I pray a lot.

Maybe it's normal for bad experiences to stay with us to remind us to avoid certain situations.

I think the bad experiences in the past are in the past already. Although you won't forget it anymore especially the traumatic ones. I guess they are there for you to stay on guard so as not to prevent it from happening again. But that is not there to make you afraid of life and paralyse you and not become productive anymore. Always conquer your fears but never forget the lesson you learned from that bad experiences because that is the most important thing for you to move on in life.

every accident will be traumatized, and stored until we drive in the same condition.

I've been in two very serious car crashes in my life (I told you about one of them), yet I am still a crazy, aggressive driver even to this day. So I guess those two bad experiences didn't affect me too badly.

I try to learn from my mistakes when it happened. One rule of advice comes from former Miami Dolphins head coach Don Shula who said in an interview "I do not let a bad experience consume me."

I should be more like that but it's in my nature to worry about things that may never happen.

I am actually very comfortable behind the wheel, but around the same age I did roll my car. If nothing else I think it served to make me a much more attentive driver.

Hi Snowy. I had an accident way back I was 6 years old, during my sister's baptism. On our way home, the cab we were riding passed by a dark alley and there was a manhole I think. The next thing I know, the cab hit a wall and the glasses shattered. It was my father who remembered everything clearly.

Ooh that would be scary for a 6 year old. Does it make you nervous when you are in a car now?

@mlgen1037 That's good. I want to overcome my driving anxiety but it's been going on for quite a while so I don't think it's going to change any time soon.

@sprite1950 Not anymore. When I ride a car, I have to be with somebody else or I will get all so scared. But I overcame that fear.

This means that the accident left a shadow on you. These experiences can't disappear. Everyone is the same. I think we can hint at ourselves in a positive way.
