In the middle of the extremely expensive Corona del Mar community in the town of Newport Beach, California, is a charming gem known as the Sherman Gardens and Library. For a $5 admission fee, you can wander through the gardens at your leisure and enjoy the seasonal flowers, the orchid hot house, the gnome garden, amazing sand castles and other delightful areas of the gardens. Or, you can spend time in the historical library. Last week, my 40 year-old daughter and I went there and enjoyed a delightful lunch on the shaded patio overlooking the gardens. The temperature was in the 70s, the flowers were aromatic, and we had a very pleasant day. If you are ever visiting Newport Beach, this is one very affordable way to spend a restful, relaxing afternoon!

@JohnRoberts - It is right on the PCH in Newport Beach and I probably drove past it hundreds of times before my daughter suggested we have lunch there. It is behind a high fence, so I had so idea what a little treasure it is until we visited the other day.

I am sure that we visited Corona del Mar and it's very possible we have seen those beautiful gardens.

@DeborahDiane There are places that we want to visit, not far from home, but we never find the time to go. The next month we want to visit the Villa d'Este gardens on the lake Como.

@LadyDuck - That is a nice thought. I drove by them probably hundreds of times but, because they are behind a high wall, I never thought to visit until our daughter suggested it. I'm so glad I did!

Indeed, Love Newport Beach and there is not many places that are affordable for poor people like me in that city so that is a neat little area. Very scenic area and sometimes I wonder how neat it would be to live there but think I would go mad at trying to keep up with the cost of living in that area.

@crossbones27 - The Corona del Mar area is insanely expensive. An old, wooden two-bedroom cottage can easily cost $1 million or more. I cannot believe how expensive it is, so I was delighted at the low admission fee for the Sherman Gardens.

@DeborahDiane Indeed, I actually found a new punk band from there called Chaser I like and they have been around for almost 19 years, but are very small. YouTube does not know them Wikipedia does not know them. I saw one of their songs on Band Camp and entered their name to see what else they had and another Chaser band came up from New York. That is how small time they are I wonder how bands like that can survive being so small, unless they have a real good day job. No way they could afford that place on their music alone. I mean Social Distortion has been around for 30 years and they are only considered middle class in that city and they are worth at least 2 or 3 million.

@crossbones27 - Hopefully, Chaser will eventually be able to break out. Otherwise, they better keep their day jobs!

@RubyHawk - Me, either. In particular, it is hard to find opportunities to just be alone with one of them for a few hours. They are usually surrounded by their own families! Our lunch together felt very special.

@mlgen1037 - No, there are several fountains surrounded by small artificial ponds, but no place where someone could swim.

Last weekend me and my brother flew to General Santos City and my aunt brought us to Sarangani Highlands Garden. The place was so pretty but I wasn't able to take a lot of pictures. Your description of this Sherman Gardens reminds me of that place.

@BelleStarr - The have a lovely restaurant. If you look on the right side of the photo above, you can see the white umbrella which is shading tables on the patio. I had a wonderful salmon salad and my daughter had a lamb stew. We shared our meal with each other, so we each got to taste what the other had.

@DeborahDiane I moved to Santa Ana in '55 from San Antonio and lived there until 1969.

@JamesHxstatic - It has been there since 1955 when Arnold Haskell bought Norman's Nursery on the PCH. I drove by it hundreds of times over the past 20 years but, since it is behind a high wall, I never entered the gardens until my daughter suggested it last week. What a wonderful surprise it was! Did you live in the area before 1955?
