Celebrating America's birthday with a "Firecracker" song quiz. Do you know the answers from these clues? Name that tune! All celebrate our nation's birth in the title... 1. A Springsteen patriotic classic. Track # 1 from the album of the same name. Written about the returning Vietnam veterans. 2. The prolific session drummer Hal Blaine played on this, and considers it one of his favorites. In this song, the writer and his longtime girlfriend Kathy Chitty (from "Kathy's song) are moving back to the states from England. The artists is reflecting on this and the U.S. as the land of opportunity in the lyrics. 3. This tune became the artists signature song about his love of country. This Lee Greenwood song was used by many politicians as part of their campaigns, most notably George Bush. The song got a lot of airplay after September 11, 2001, as patriotism became a priority in America. 4. Written as a solo artist after his breakup from his partner in 1970, this song reflects on the American experience and had political overtones having been released after President Nixon's election. The lyrics reference struggle, weariness, hard work, confusion, and homesickness. This melancholy tune was a track from the "There Goes Rhymin' Simon" LP. 5. The song was a salute to 60's rock and roll. It tells the story of how rock and roll emerged in America, and musicians took personal risks for their music, and how it influenced future artists including this singer. In the song's lyrics the artist name drop's a who's who's of performers who shaped his sound and music. Some of them listed in his song were: Frankie Lyman, Bobby Fuller, Mitch Ryder, Jackie Wilson, Shangra La's, Young Rascals, Martha Reeves and James Brown. 6. This English artist was not from the U.S., his song is about his experiences there. The song is from the album of the same name released in 1975. The line near the end, "I heard the news today, oh boy," is a reference to the Beatles song "A Day In The Life." John Lennon worked with this artist for his cover of the Beatles "Across The Universe" which was included on this album. Born David Robert Jones you might know him as David Bowie. He changed his name to avoid confusion with Davy Jones of the Monkees. 7. The track was cut on the 4th of July. As one band member said, "I don't know if that had anything to do with Tom writing about using a U.S. association, but it could have been." This was not a hit song but it became one of their most popular songs. As the band's lead guitarist said, it was a beautiful song about a debutante sort of girl, college co-ed, blonde locks and all, at least that was one interpretation. 8. This is a tribute to immigration in America. Written by Neil Diamond, the song expresses the hope and opportunity sought by Europeans landing on United States soil. 9. This song was written by Irving Berlin, a sweeping patriotic anthem expressing gratitude for what this country has done for its citizens. Kate Smith had a rousing rendition of this song. 10. This song was recorded by this soul artist and used in Sly Stalone's movie Rocky IV. The song was written by Dan Hartman ("I Can Dream About You") and Charles Midnight. The tune won the 1986 Grammy Award for Best Rhythm & Blues Vocal Performance. The song charted at # 4 for this artist and reintroduced him to a new audience. Was one of his biggest hits. I can name some patriotic songs but not sure they'd be some of the ones you are quizzing us on. Does that made me a dud?

If you don't enjoy Rock n' Roll, or patriotic tunes like God Bless The USA and God Bless America I guess so

1. Maybe he should’ve combined that title and the title of his third album and given us “Born to Run In The USA.” 2. Now why would someone dating Artie’s buddy want to count the cars on the New Jersey Turnpike? 3. Blech. That song made my “country songs that make me cringe” list. 4. And I dreamed I was flying every time I heard that song. Man, I haven’t heard that in ages. Gotta drag out that album. 5. They were rockin’! The part of I-65 near Seymour is named for Mr. Mellencamp. 6. Just you and your idol singing falsetto, now! You know how JJ hates radio edits? That may be the worst radio edit I’ve ever heard. Maybe because I love the song so much. 7. Oh, yeah, all right, take it easy baby! 8. Not one of Neil’s best, but it beats “Heartlight.” Not to mention song #3. 9. And ONLY Kate Smith recordings should be played. I love that joke in Good Morning Vietnam about using Kate Smith to jam Russian radar, but DANG she nailed this song. 10. And then there was Weird Al’s parody, “Living With a Hernia”..... Great selection (except #3, of course)!

Sorry about # 3. It does make a lot of favorite patriotic song lists so I used it. Great comments as always! You had me laughing at #1. Not to mention most of the other comments.

@dgobucks226 — yeah but there is “American Made” by the Oak Ridge Boys to use instead! Glad you got a chuckle. That’s my primary goal!

American Pie was one I thought you were alluding to, but those artists aren't mentioned in that song. I thought I would do better, as I really thought I had a good handle on Patriotic songs. However, the only one I hope I can lay claim to, at least with your one reference to Irving Berlin and Kate Smith is God Bless America.

@dgobucks226 Well it's safe to say I know those songs, and I know the artists, but I never would have put the two together. Except for the one I got right. All songs about America have that affect on me.
