Does this look like $40 to you?

What the heck are these? They're Dynaco A-25 screens. They're from a popular loudspeaker that was a best-seller in the early 1970s. Why are the screens alone worth $40? Because that particular weave is no longer made, and if you want to have "authentic" Dynaco A-25s now, you have to find original screens that have not been torn or stained beyond repair--a rare thing. I have already removed these screens from the frames, cleaned them, and stored them away. They will be used when I want to put together the "perfect" pair of Dynaco A-25s. A nice pair sells for about $300 on eBay right now.

That's what I was thinking - what the heck are those ! But the important thing is you know what the heck they are - and someday with your handiwork they will give you something back. Treasures are certainly worth it, especially if you know what you're dealing with!

Talk about "niche knowledge." But it works for me.

Right now I am having my own culture shock. Just relocated for Daytona Beach, Florida after 20+ years in Riga, Latvia. What happened while I was gone. My favorite kinds of food are up at 3, 4 or even 5 dollars and very little for 1 or 2. It just might be time to start a permanent diet. One basic meal a day.

@RasmaSandra I had wondered how you had chosen Daytona Beach. Now I know.

What led to the move? It's a tad warmer in Florida, isn't it?

@RasmaSandra Did you and your husband enjoy your time in Latvia?

The problem sometimes is that they break when you try to clean them, good luck with those two.

@TheHorse Sometimes also very strong and good fabric breaks after many years. One of the bed sheets my great grandmother made with the loom 120 years ago gave up last week. I am devastated, the best bed sheets I had.

Thanks. Dynaco used some strong fabric! I always re-glue the frames for extra strength.

They look like trash to me, but it's good if you can make something decent from them

Here's what they looked like in my shower after I cleaned them in my kitchen sink with my "secret formula." Equally unimpressive!

@TheHorse So you will make way more than the $40 you paid.

@Hannihar I may have two pairs now of good Dynaco fabric. I'll have to check.

You know the value of what you have as well as how they should be cared for. Good luck on making that perfect set of speakers.

Wow. It’s funny how we think back on what we had in the 70s, and only now do we realize how well things were made then.

No, I harvested them from some A-25s that I bought for cheap. I refinished the speakers and sold them with my "custom" fabic, and kept the original fabric for a better pair.

When there's black around the edges, it just means that the paint from the frames got on the fabric. That comes off with a good "magic formula" soaking.

Despite the many innovation in technology, things produce in the past were built to last while those made at the present are more in concurrence with the throw-away mentality of today's society.

I just put it in money market at 1.5%. Some day I will retire. But I'll keep playing music and restoring stuff made of wood.

Very true. I have some "replacement fabric" that's good, and looks "classy," but it's not "original." True collectors want "original."
