I saw a black cat walking down the middle of the street

I looked up from the computer and saw a black cat sauntering down the middle of the street. Being a good cat mama, I went to the door and yelled at Princess "Get out of the street!!" I get a drop dead stare, and the cat moseyed on down the road toward the vacant house. I yelled louder and clapped my hands. Princess comes to Bob when he claps his hands. This cat RAN on down the street, into the neighboring yard and hid. Princess walked up from the right and began possessively sharpening her claws on the porch. I do not know who that other black cat was. It was not Princess.

I yelled loud enough and long enough. There are people who will deliberately hit animals with their cars.

@GardenGerty I know -- I have heard people bragging that they do that before. It always makes me anxious when I see animals strolling through the streets.

@lnillerman Because they are cruel and think it's funny.

Pretty common with short hair black cats, I think. I have not seen that one around here before.

Good thing that Princess wasn't around to tangle with that other cat.

As long as they do not come up in our yard she ignores them. It is a good thing it did not come into the yard, I would have made it come inside.

@GardenGerty My cat that used to go out would not let me go out with her or let me follow her,. When I saw her laying in line with the olther cats I called her and she came to me. My cat had a mind of her own and would come back inside when she felt like it. My Sophie goes out in our hallway in the building and has gotten scared from something and found her way down the stairs. She knows how to jump down from our porch to the one below and go on the roof of the house in front of our building but she is afraid to jump up. Otherwise she stays inside or on our porch these days. wnen I am home.

Mostly Princess stays in our yard, but she does get curious sometimes about activity across the street or road. It is a mostly empty field, except when they process the wheat there for a couple of weeks or when people play frisbie golf or fly kites. She usually waits and when the people are gone she goes to check it out. She does not like to stay inside if the weather is nice, but if we are gone away from the house we bring her in.

@GardenGerty I understand. So, that was not Princess you saw? My cat likes to be on the porch when the weather is nice but when I have to go out I have to close the door to the porch because I had problems with the ones that lived below us and had trouble getting my cat back. She was on their porch and I could not get to her from outside because the porch is high so there are new ones moving in and not sure what they will be like so I cannot let that happen again so have to keep her inside.

They do. It was too far away for me to see that it did not have on a red collar.

Aw. a lot of black cat in the neighborhood? There was an old superstitious belief here in our country that black cat in the middle of street is a bad omen.

Other than my Princess I have not seen a lot of black cats around here. Our superstition is that you should not let a black cat cross your path.

@GardenGerty what is sad is that they give the black cat as a symbol of bad luck

Either that or they will all run away, for fear I will make them come inside for the night.

Her full name is Princess Inky, but we did name her for a person who believed herself to be a "princess". Inky cause she is black.

You saved a cat's life, you did good. Though the cat wasn't your Princess, you did good!

@GardenGerty To see cats are good luck. In Britain black cats are very good luck.
