He doesn’t need a haircut

Yesterday my kids and I had a yard sale. A friend of mine came and set up a table of her jewelry. My sons hair hasn’t been cut in quite a few months. It’s a few inches long at least down to his ears. It doesn’t look good but it doesn’t look bad either. She told my son whose 10 he looks like a girl and she’s going to call him a girls name until he gets his hair cut. He said he didn’t care that it doesn’t matter what gender you are with having longer hair. Yay for my son standing up for how he feels! I told him I don’t care what he does with his hair if he wants to grow it to his feet it’s fine with me. She’s in her 60s and my father in law whose 65 always acts the same way says he looks like a girl when his hair gets long. I just find it so rude. I don’t like my friends hair in the least with how she buzzes it around the bottom and has her bangs cut too short but I would never be rude and tell her that. It’s different if my son asked people how they liked his hair but for them to come out without being asked for their opinion and tell him he needs to cut it is so rude. Photo is of a toy that melted from the sun during our yard sale.

She is rude, she should mind her own business. I would never say something like this.

@LadyDuck agreed! I only tell compliments or I keep my mouth shut unless asked for my opinion!

Some adults feel that children should not have a choice - adults should make all the decisions.

@Kandae11 I know many people who feel that kids should not have a say in how they style their hair and that's fine in their lives while raising their own kids but they shouldn't be rude to others you know. Just like I don't give then a hard time about making their kids cut their hair!

I add m glad your son has the strength to stand up for what he believes in. If they use to see hippee wonder what they would have to say.

That was rude but probably something she has done to all boys her entire life. Old habits die hard and some people just don't get the message.

@Shellyann36 she hasn't mastered that concept of not saying anything if it isn't nice. Maybe she just doesn't care. My son is really sensitive so I was glad he didn't let her upset him and stood up for himself.

@Shellyann36 that last part is especially true! Her telling him he needs a haircut but yet we don't tell her how we don't like her hair cut.

@shaggin One of my aunts is like this. She is older now and it has toned down quite a bit. I know I hated seeing her in my 20's and 30's though. She always had something smart to say about someone else. As if she didn't have enough holes in her glass house.

What a nasty and rude thing to say to anyone, especially a 10 year old! My 8 year old grandson has long hair and likes it that way. It's not an issue, since he can have it cut whenever. It's his right and I'm proud of him for expressing himself.

@DianneN I do recall your grandson having long hair. My son's hair isn't quite as long as his yet. Not sure if he will keep growing it or will let me cut it but I do give him the choice. I agree it was so rude of my friend to say this to him and call him a girls name. I'm really glad he was able to stick up for himself.

I personally wouldnt have my boys hair long, because i think boys look better with it short and girls with it long. But i also wouldn't do what she did. Smh.

I know without you even needing to say it that you wouldn't be rude to a kid that way. I do understand completely that if you have a son you will make him keep his hair cut. My boyfriend and many others I know feel the same way and that's fine with me. Their kids their rules. I just feel kids have so little control over their lives with having to do everything they are told that this is one thing I let them be in control of and express themselves with their hair and clothing. She asked if my daughter thinks shes a boy with the way she was dressed and I just said no that she just doesn't like girly colors. I was not going to get into transgender topics with a woman who is so against homosexuals etc. I know for a fact her son isn't exactly straight and wonder if he has always had to hide it from her and possibly why they don't get along well.

@shaggin right, your kids, your rules. only one boy in my family has had long hair (as a kid anyways), and that is my aunts only child, because he grew it out to give it for charity which made him feel great! ever since, he's had it short and doesn't want to grow it again for awhile. actually, none of the males, as adults have their hair longer than their ears, ever. just not a thing to our family I guess. what a jerk for her to ask. just mind your business lady. poor boy if he isn't straight and his moms like that, snice she'd obviously be worse with her own child than someone elses.

Wow, you had a hot yard sale. You are also right, it was uncalled for for her to tell him he needs a cut.

I don't know why some people express opinions on personal matters without being asked.

@1hopefulman I used to be like that as a kid but learned to bite my tounge and be nice as I got older. Apparently she hasn't learned how or doesn't care.

That's your friend saying stuff like that to your son? That's not much of a friend. Your kid was left out to defend himself. He's awfully young for that.

@sallypup I was right there with him and was watching to see how he would react and handle it. I think he handled himself pretty well and am proud of him. I will talk to him about her rudeness today and make sure he knows how proud of him I am that he stood up for himself and doesn't confirm to what others expect of him.

That is rude. In fact, I like boys with longer hair it sort of gives them character and besides perhaps it might inspire him to rock and roll. This woman just sounds like such a busybody. Makes me wonder if she would tell any of the rock and roll legends if she met one to cut their hair.

@RasmaSandra I bet she would tell them to cut their hair lol. People like that only think one hair cut is acceptable and that's pretty much a military buzz cut. I told her how gorgeous a guy looked the other day on a motorcycle with his hair pulled back in a low bun.
