Apricot dance

So a neighbor across the way heard my call for apricots
and yessiree-Bob, come three o'clock of a hot July afternoon
found me standing staring up,
their sprinkler dousing their weed patch.
First it was thank you for coming
and how are you and my answer and I am fine
and here is the tree for you
and out comes the wife: thank you for coming
and again, how are you?
I waltzed through the stilted friend-greeting
grabbing bird bit apricots off a branch then three
nodding my polite hello ma'am! to the birds.
Bucket filled, car key to hand
I backed out, no farewell apparent,
friendship a formal tux at a prom,
apricots gathered, friendship tight as a well tucked bed sheet.
