How many of you have had the measles, mumps, etc.?

I had the measles and sure I had the mumps and all the childhood diseases there were. I read just now in our online news that there was something about measles here in some parts of Israel that some of our soldiers and residents have gotten them. Have any of you had them as adults if you did not have them as kids and what was it like?

I had measles and I was originally having a check up on a doctor about my eyes and headaches...which in turn he learned after i showed him.

Nope. I was vaccinated as a child. I had what is called "fifth disease" for which there was no vaccination for. I don't remember anything but a strange rash and not being able to go in sunlight. I also had chicken pox. . . TWICE. There was no vaccination for that when I was a child either. There is a vaccination for measles, mumps, and German measles (rubella). There is no reason for parents to NOT have their children vaccinated against those deadly viruses.

@NJChicaa So what was the rash you had? Can you get that rash as an adult? You are right that parents so make sure kids get vaccinated for those diseases. Some hate needles.

@Hannihar It is caused by a virus and is called the "fifth disease" because it was the fifth of other rash-forming diseases along with measles, mumps, chicken pox, etc. Anyone can get it as there is no vaccine for it.

@NJChicaa So are you saying you can get it as an adult too? Is it harder to deal with as an adult if you get it?

I only had measles as a kid. I did get chicken pox when I was a young mother, and it was awful.

@rakski That must have been very hard being a young mother coping with a child and then getting that.

@Hannihar It was awful. I was so ill, and my older son had a broken arm at the time. My younger son came down with the measles first, but the doctors kept us away from our older son, so he wouldn't get chicken pox. Thank goodness for my friends and my husband! They did everything for us.

I had the chicken pox and measles when I was a child, but didn't get the mumps until I was a young adult. I was very sick with them, there is a reason why they call it a childhood illness, and I can attest to that! I was bed-ridden for about a week, with a very high fever which zapped my energy level as well as my appetite.

I had all the usual diseases as a child. I know that if you've had chicken pox you can get shingles later in life but there is a vaccination for it. I don't know about measles.

@Hannihar I don't believe you need it if you've had measles. I had measles and all childhood diseases. My doctor has never told me I need those vaccinations.I had the smallpox vaccination and shingles vaccination.
