Sometime back we had a heated discussion , actually an argument when one of my friends accused another of being stingy which was actually not true ... and when some of us tried to tell her that she was thrifty , she felt that being stingy and thrifty are one and the same ! She felt that being careful with things and money was being stingy and she simply did not want to hear any further ..

I am thrifty as I spend my hard earned money judiciously. But no one can call me a stingy one.

Being thrifty is spending money judiciously whereas being stingy is not spending the money even when you need to. This is my opinion.

@anil02 Yes, you're right. Stingy has some negative connotation while thrity or frugal is an admirable trait.

Being thrifty when one's budget is tight is good..stingy is when you have a lot but pretend to be poor..i think a lot of people are thrifty though, not stingy.
