Have you ever picked up a physical copy of a book, opened it to a random page and read a paragraph to decide whether you wanted to buy it or not? I can't say that I have done this a lot, but I did do this the other day when I visited the thrift shop. The spine of the book is what drew my attention, the title helped keep it but one of the lines within is what had me buying it. I am so glad I did. I paid $2.50 for this book. The book follows Dr. O'Reilly as told by his partner in a small town medical practice in Ulster (Northern) Ireland. Told almost in the fashion of Sherlock Holmes (but without the mystery and case solving), it's definitely worth a read for those who enjoy very short stories. Did I mention I only paid $2.50. Retail online is atlest $9.00 for a new copy, and $2.00 + the cost to ship for used. What have you been reading?
Long before Dr. Fingal Flahertie O’Reilly made most readers’ acquaintance in Patrick Taylor’s bestselling novel An Irish Country Doctor, ...

@LadyDuck Thanks for noticing about my absence. I have been keeping awfully busy in offline activities/office work so just could not be here. I hope you are doing well.

Hey! It has been quite awhile since you've been here. I don't normally do that either, but I'm glad I did read from the middle of the book this time.

I do not do this for all books as that would take too much time. This book caught my eye but I wasn't quite sure since it is a big volume of a book. Opening it up worked for me though and I am so glad I bought it.

@Jessabuma It is. It has it's funny moments. The main character is a bit full of himself, thinks he's the expert on everything, but is cunning, clever and a closet philanthropist. In one of the stories he bought an entire stock of badly built rocking ducks (not horses)so that a couple could emigrate to America.

I am still reading "Origin" by Dan Brown. It's a big book and I only read in the evening after I go to bed now. I will not start another book before I finish this one.

I saw some Dan Brown books at the thrift store. I thought about getting them. I had read Angels and Demons as well as The Da Vinci Code several years ago. Are you liking Origin?

@LadyDuck I assumed origin was about our origin as homosapiens. I have read other books or novellas centering around the idea of where we came from. There was once that I read a horror type piece about our origins. I can't recall where I read it but it as very interesting albeit scary.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I am liking Origin and I am more and more curious to know "Where did we come from?" and "Where are we going?". This is what all the plot of the book is about. I also liked Inferno, the book was good, the movie horrible.

I've read the dust covers before but will check out reviews on GoodReads. Currently I'm reading Dean Koontz's The Good Guy and it's a very good thriller. It's not his normal wild, monster, evil, weird stuff. Very edge of the seat and has some humorous banter splashed in. When I'm finished I'll begin another of C.J. Box's Joe Pickett Game Warden books. I was given a book by him and I'm hooked. Usually I read serial killer, thriller, mystery and some biographies. I also found Jana Deleon's writing fun to read. Her Louisiana Longshot was good and I'll read the next in the series.

If I am going to borrow the book on my kindle, I will go to goodreads and find out more about it. I was in the middle of a thrift store at the time, and while I could have connected to the network and looked, I like the spontaneity that just reading the dust covers and going by appearance affords me. I've read some Dean Koontz, my sister got me into reading him. I haven't read very many though. I'll have to check out the other books you've mentioned and keep an eye out for them the next time I go to the thrift shop.

I usually read the back cover to determine if I want to buy it. I'm glad it's a good book.

To be honest, I read part of the synopsis but wasn't interested. I was going to put it back but decided that I'd open it to a random page and read a few lines. Had I not done that, I wouldn't have found such a great book. I'll be going back to that store again on Monday and hopefully spend a little more of a voucher.

@just4him As am I. I think there are too many books out there that people don't take a chance on and so do not know what they are missing.

i try to broaden my horizons book wise as often as I can. Some of the authors I picked out I had heard of but read very little of in the past.

I usually read the back cover or inside cover to decide if it's a good book. I'm reading right now Dark Tower VI: Song of Susannah by Stephen King. It's pretty good.

I haven't read many of his book despite him being such a prolific author. I considered getting a couple when I was at the thrift store but those were a little more expensive than what I wanted to pay.

I have been enjoying this series on audio books while driving. Now we had to get a newer car and it has no DVD player! It is a nice light hearted series to listen to

I only paid $2.50 for the book, which wasn't bad. I"m sure it was fun to listen to while driving, and it stinks that you don't have a DVD player in the new car to listen to it.

@paigea *gasp* The horror! I don't know, I prefer to read. Some books I have listened to and liked but I usually have a "voice" for different characters and a narrator ruins that for me.
