I saw a funny story on our local news today where a homeowner was perplexed at the disappearance of her strawberries and tomatoes. She assumed it was the squirrels until she reviewed her security camera. It wasn't the squirrels at all but the mailman. The video was played on TV showing the mailman picking and munching on her strawberries and tomatoes. It as as if he was having lunch on a regular basis. He didn't take just one or two but spent a good while filling up like he was at an all you can eat buffet. The homeowner said she doesn't want him fired but would be satisfied with a strawberry pie or tomato sauce and an apology. The post office is investigating and I don't think he will have a job much longer. Have you ever munched on your neighbour's fruits or vegetables without their permission?

It's better to ask permission when we want something from our neighbors..

Yes, you never know if you will be caught on camera. I wonder if he didn't see the camera.

I feel bad for the mailman. He should ask for strawberries than stealing them.

It's hard enough to grow a crop successfully with all of the elements to deal with: Bugs, too much heat, too much rain, animals, frost. Now we have to deal with the mailman? Oh come on, please. How rude is that? Years ago, I planted a pineapple crown in our backyard thinking that one day we would have a nice, new pineapple. A few days after I planted it, it was gone. At first I thought a human took it which got me a little mad but then I realized that it must have been taken by a racoon. I was O.K. with that. For whatever reason, I'm fine with animal thieves but not human thieves.

@Freelanzer I've heard that they can take a couple of years. Oh well, it was worth a shot. I feel good about feeding a cute little pineapple thief.

A pineapple is so hard to grow - I have tried and never succeeded, but yes I can accept it from the animals not humans who can grow their own if they want

@Freelanzer if they did reassign him and the residents there recognize his face from the news, they'll probably start protecting their plants.

She is kind, all she wants is an apology. I really think they will have to reassign him to another route after this.

I'm sure he's sorry he got caught on tape. It's too bad he'll lose his job over his munching habit. No, I've never purloined my neighbors fruits and veggies.

He may or may not lose his job but how would you like to continue working there and delivering mail when your face is all over the internet munching on the fruits of someone else's labor?

Aww, well that wasn't right of him to be eating her garden up, I am sure if he would have asked she would have gladly given him some.

What made it worse is the her garden consisted of hanging baskets of strawberries and tomatoes is not like she had a huge supply of the stuff.

If he took from an orchard it won't be too bad as lots fall by the wayside but this woman only had hanging baskets so she didn't have a lot to spare

stealing it is a despicable act, he should ask permission of who has the fruit tree.

cctv or security cameras are so common now it's better to assume there's one than none. if he's really short on money and grateful for the free meal, it's still wrong to assume that it's out there for everyone and that the owner wouldn't notice. how would he feel if it's the other way around? if neighbors and strangers feel entitled to take whatever he worked on in his own property?

Exactly. You wonder how people are still caught on camera today. I can assure you they get paid very well so money may not have been the issue, just opportunity and greed,

As a child I went 'scrumping' - pinching apples off neighbours' trees. Haven't done it since though. That mailman went a bit far - you could understnd him taking a strawberry or two, but not stuffing himself like that.

I think lots of us did that as kids especially if it was hanging over the fence. If he had pilfered one or two I am sure she wouldn't have missed it.

I would never do something like. If the mailman is USPS, he won't be fired because they get away with just about anything.

The mail delivery workers here have has a very strong union and they too get away with a lot. If it is not written in their contracts that they can't steal strawberries then there isn't much the post office can do.

As children we would go around the neighbourhood plucking fruits but nobody seemed to mind . Children going home from school would often have the guavas and plums from our garden too. The postman must like strawberry berry berry much

We did that as children too and we know the neighbors didn't mind and there was lots of it going to waste anyway. However if I plant a few tomatoes and berried in hanging baskets outside my door, I would like to taste the fruits of my labor and not have them eaten by someone else.

Ohhhhh, but there is nothing better than vine ripened fruit and veggies! Store bought is crud in comparison! Around here we offer the mail carrier some of the "fruits" of our labors. I always have a basket full of garden fresh produce for the mail carrier (when I have a garden) and the only thing I ask is for the basket back. I was taught to share.

@Freelanzer We spoiled our mail person and our trash collectors. We would give them fruit and veggies from our gardens, gifts at Christmas time, and of course Valentines and Easter candy. It was great because the Trash collectors would go into our garage and get our garbage cans if we happened to forget to put them out. They would empty the trash, put the cans back, catch the dogs and put them back in the garage and close the door again. The mail person would always put the big packages in a specially designated place where they couldn't be readily seen so we wouldn't have to make a special trip to town to the post office (both my parents worked) as one of them would have to take time off just to go to the post office. My parents could also leave the cash in the mail box for stamps and the next day a sheet of stamps would be in the mail box. We always would share with them whenever we received extra bounty from friends that had farms. I think that's where I learned to share as much as I do. I remember as a child how much fun it was for me to see how happy it made our mail person and the trash collectors when they received their goodies from us...and it was way back then that I made the promise to myself that I would continue doing the sharing of the bounty and the joy with others just to share the joy. I don't know who gets more joy from the sharing, the recipients or myself.
