Decorated trees at Echuca, Victoria

We went for a walk on the wharf at Echuca in Victoria, Australia a week or two ago and came upon these two old tree trunks that have been embellished with a number of thongs (flip flops). Many of these have names and messages written on them. Between the two is a river red gum which provided timber for paddle-steamers and much of the wharf.
I’ve seen a tree just off a country road which is covered with hard hats and trees covered with knitted bits and pieces are fairly common too. The roadside decorations I’m not so keen on involve putting stuffed toys in trees or tied to fences. After a couple of showers of rain, they look unloved and quite unattractive – at least that’s my opinion.

You don't see a lot of these trees but there are a few around.

Not as nice though. I like the thought of a tree where people meet for conversation or whatever. In the very hot areas of northern Australia, they always seem to meet under a big shade tree whenever there is an important meeting - probably because there isn't much air-conditioning up there!

@topffer We have an avenue of trees that we've planted down the paddock. There are four rows of about eight trees. In the summer it is much cooler under those trees. And the roos love them too. There is always a group relaxing in the shade.

That's very interesting, I've never seen anything like that before.

@JudyEv Was that done on purpose to be a play on words? Or did the pans signify something else entirely?

@moffittjc I'm pretty sure the pans don't signify anything special - just a play on words.

There's a tree in Laguna Beach that has old flip-flops hanging from it. It must be getting popular around the world!

@JudyEv I think you must be right. It would be fun to know where it started!

I guess it's a bit like putting keys on bridges but I don't really like it.

In Turkey the decorate trees with glass eyes which are much nicer in my opinion. I would not like to see the flip flops!

I can see the flip flops and hats.. being semi weather proof! but I agree on the stuffed animals, those have got to look bad over time.
There have been a few times I've left a stuffed animal outside after washing it (I forgot it on top of the kids play house which is away from the laundry lines). The next day its usually okay, but if its a day after that... I just go ahead and rewash it since it just doesn't look fresh/clean!
