My lamentable Bastille Day

It was our national holiday yesterday, but it started on Friday in my place. At 11 PM I heard some metallic noises, and I immediately accused the restaurant at the corner of the street. I am biased, they are responsible for a lot of noises and music coming to my windows, but not this time, I realized that it was the Bastille Day fireworks. But why a July 14th fireworks on July 13th ? that’s wrong. I missed the fireworks. And the ball following it. Yesterday I went to do some shopping at 11 AM. There were a lot of servicemen wearing their uniform in the streets, coming from the military parade. I have never been to a military parade since my military service... I missed a photo worth gold. There were 2 infantry captains holding hands in a street, the woman was a head more than her man and stiff like a pole. I did not dared to take a photo of this nice couple. Again a remembrance of the army : a captain can send a private to jail 7 days if you make fun of him/her... I watched in the evening on tv the concert at the Eiffel Tower. 250 classical musicians and several great lyrical artists before the fireworks. I realized how offbeat was this event : not 10% of the population has ever seen an opera, and it is not this concert that will give them the desire to see one, it is a boring potpourri of familiar pieces. Worst, it was commented by a tv presenter specialized in royal marriages. Fortunately the Parisians had many popular balls elsewhere. The best are given in fire stations. When will they broadcast one ? Finally I believe that the main event yesterday was the attempt of world record of the Chicken dance in a village in Brittany, Mahalon. There is not a marriage without this old stupid song and its accordion. They were needing 300 dancers to break the record, I do not know if they reached the number. To sum up, my Bastille Day 2018 was lamentable. Focusing on 2019.

I would think France is in a frenzy over the World Cup final.

France maybe, I heard some soccer supporters in my street. Not me, I am afraid that if France wins Macron will take it as an opportunity to make us swallow a few more restriction pills.

France males have to do their military service? (or was it something in the past?) - Interesting, that your Bastille Day this year was celebrated on a Friday the 13th! (I got very unlucky just that day for some reason!)

It was mandatory when I was young, but it has been suppressed in the 1990's. I was born too early. I try to not travel on Friday 13th, to avoid accidents. It is a day bringing bad luck, except for gamers.

@YrNemo And you have been lucky to be safe, there are more car accidents on Friday the 13th than any other day of the year. And not only car accidents : the plane crash in the Andes Cordillera in the 1970's where they became cannibals to survive : Friday the 13th ; the Bataclan attack in Paris, the worst we had : Friday the 13th ; the stock market crash of 1989, completely unexpected : Friday the 13th, etc.

@topffer I had never been unlucky until the last Friday the 13th! My daughter did caution me earlier on the day, and I did laugh at her superstition! Oh well, the day was fine in the morning, still fine in the early afternoon. By afternoon, I was stranded in a neighboring local - bus service on strike until 6 PM that day!!! (I didn't know they would play such b-st-rdly deed or I wouldn't have chosen such a day to visit that place at a wrong time. Took me an extra 3 hours just to get home - climbling about a hundred steps staircase x 2, took extra trains and some shuttle bus services etc. I could imagine myself look frayed like Albert Einstein by the time I got home... with spiky silver hair gone everywhere .)

In spite of it being your worst day as you call it you have the innate ability to make us all smile with the way you put it across. I know very well how you feel about the noise as once I had to live five years in a place where they invited themselves to place an ilegal disco in there every San Fermines and blast us all out with their disco music for no less than twelve hours with no less than fifty speakers all along the walls of the bajera with very good woofers too what I most admired was the quality of the woofers and I got to know all the songs of David Bisbal and David Civera and not only that they shook our walls and windows for over 12 hours and the fireworks were a mere hiccup compared to all that. My friend San Fermina I call her managed to boot him and his cronies out of there after a long political wrestle that lasted no less than five whole years. Reckon that Friday the 13th was every day with that guy around and his cronies bless him and his little cotton socks. You are funny tops hugs.

@topffer Yes, he and his cronies made people´s lives a real misery. The first day of San Fermines he gave us a nice present 24 hours non stop and then was a bit kinder and dwindled it down to 13 or 14 hours. Two weeks later I was still hearing David Bisbal sing in my ears and the thumping of the huge woofers he had underneath us. I can laugh now but it was no joke as we all suffered it the ones that could not get away from it right then. Because if I could have done I would have done. Again he had friends in the Town Hall and that got him every door open for what he wanted to do. I am glad that your Restaurant only plays every so often that is not so bad is it? It can be annoying sometimes yes but like him and his evil Disco hmmm. This is one of his songs that was going at the time but I like him a lot so I did not mind him at all.

An illegal disco ? Finally I should be happy to have only a restaurant with a band outdoors times to times. The ears are accustomed to the noise coming from it, the music is more annoying but there is nothing that I can do. It is good that you managed to have it stopping the musical activities

@lovinangelsinstead21 People can think they have friends among politicians, if things are turning bad not a politician will recognize them anymore. I have seen it many times in several places, even one who was bragging that he was a friend of the President, but the said president did not moved a finger to help him. I never heard this guy before. He is good, but not 24/24...

I missed the Chicken Dance event, but I have not missed the little accident during the parade on the Champs Elysée. One of the planes of La Patrouille de France had wrong color and the fall of the two motards.

I have not watched the parade. Weird that 2 motards felt, I never saw something similar. The Chicken Dance was probably the main event of the day.

@LadyDuck Never mind, I want to see only positive events. For example, France owns a new world record, there were 572 dancers at the Chicken Dance.

My fault, I missed this Bastille Day quite completely. I will never see the end of these chickens, it will need a few more generations.

@JudyEv I enjoyed this mime festival, it was the first time I was going there, but I am ready to come back next year. The last discussion I read from you was about a street artist who painted a silo. I am not often on myLot actually, but I will be at home in holidays at the beginning of next week and I will have more time.

A bust of a Bastille Day ? Military couple photo - oh, something that could have gone viral on FB . I guess they missed the mark on the concert just as they did the date of the fireworks . The chicken dance record . . . I would think 300 dancers would be quite easy to round up - but perhaps not something many would want to participate in on a national holiday (or maybe ever) . But hey, these sure made France's victory all the more exciting!!

@much2say Nobody would have bet a cent on France winning the world cup 2 months ago. The record was more obvious, we can mobilize millions of silly people at any moment for an important task like this one. It makes our strength.

And a couple of officers. You can see that only on July 14th. This lyrical concert is organized since several years in Paris, and I find it even more offbeat than "Paris plage" and its beaches and deckchairs near the Seine. I have not checked if they found 300 patriots for the Chicken Dance. Checking. Goooaaalll ! 572 dancers ! I am proud that my country owns this new world record.

I checked the video. I recognised the song. It was famous in Germany, too, many years ago. The tune is an ear worm. I am shocked that people still dance it. It's as square and bourgeois as German carnival festivities!

That presentation of the concert sounds deadly boring to me too. Balls in fire stations? That is interesting. I wonder how they do that? Chicken Dance? How awful!

It is a very old tradition in Paris, they remove the vehicles from the courtyards to organize the balls. If somebody feels sick the firemen are not far. I do not know if they are as efficient if a fire happens during the ball. Two hours of lyrical concert before the fireworks are too much.
