Posting your reply to someone's discussion as your own discussion

I love to write and share my thoughts and opinions with others. Often times when I reply to someone's discussion I end up writing a lengthy response. It can be a paragraph or even a few paragraphs. When I look at the length of my responses at times it feels like I can publish them as their own discussions. I don't remember if I have ever done that though. But it's a good idea I think, especially since there are people who are not fans of long responses and probably don't even read them. I'd think that we are allowed to do this. If we are, do we have to mention that this is in reply to a discussion, and say what that discussion was about? Or do we just post the content of our reply that we were originally going to post in that discussion and that's it? Have you guys ever considered posting your reply to someone's discussion as your own discussion? And is it a good idea to do?

Oh Yes, many a times! I had lengthy interaction with others on some one other's discussion! It doesn't matters me if that is my discussion or not, I will happily participate so long I have something to add!

@lovebuglena , because they think by attending more discussions with short replies they can make more money here, which is not the fact!

@AKRao24 If they assume that then they are wrong.

Not everyone is a fan of long comments/responses, or long discussions for that matter. And I don't get why.

Not allowed. It would probably fall under the rule that states one shouldn't openly converse with just one person. If you could word the reply as a discussion itself, further expanding on the original person's discussion, than that would (and has) probably slide.

For example, someone can ask a question in their discussion. My reply can be very long. Instead of publishing that reply in that person's discussion can't I just start my own discussion which will have all the content of my reply I was originally going to post on that person's discussion. I don't think that I am actually conversing with just one person in this case. But I think I'd probably have to mention the discussion that made me want to share what I originally wrote in the reply. Hope this makes sense.

I've done so a couple times, when I know the answer a person is looking for is going to be lengthy. I always mention the person by name and @ so people will know what prompted the discussion, which is a response.

Yes, I have thought of that before and I don't think there would be anything wrong with it if you take it into a different direction

You can make a copy-paste and then delete part of the reply.

What I was thinking of doing is not publishing that reply in a person's discussion but instead publishing it as a discussion of my own.

I think this is a good idea. You get your inspiration from other people's discussion.

I rather have my own discussion. If you want to reply to a post then do so.

I've never done it. I think it'd be best to let others know that it's a reply to a post, and tag who wrote it to make sure they see it too

Sometimes, but I don't post them as my own discussion. Because it should be a comment on someone's discussion. If I will to make one, it could be a new one. Or I can get an idea of that conversation.

If I was reading a post about someone's trip on an airplane and it suddenly reminded me of the time I saw a UFO, I do not see why my posting about the UFO would be wrong. I got the idea because the airplane story brought up a memory of the UFO.

Why wouldn't it be allowed?

I would write a short response in the discussion. If I start my own discussion about the same topic, I wouldn't write that it is a response. I would write something like this: "I just read a discussion by (mylotter's name) The discussion inspired me to write a discussion about (topic)"

Good suggestion. That works well I think.

I have done that. My response to someone's post reminded me of an incident or anecdote that I should write about. And a couple of times, I did. Of course, I expanded it and told a more complete story, often from a different angle. I don't see anything wrong with that. It was my thoughts and my writing.

I see nothing wrong with that either. You are not violating anything.

I do that as well but thought maybe it's better to make a discussion out of it rather than post it in a response as not everyone likes long responses. But then again, not everyone likes long discussions either.

I think many people do. If I read an interesting discussion that brings up a memory, I'll leave a short response then tell my story in a post of my own with an honorable mention of the person and discussion that inspired it.

Good idea. It's a nice thing to mention the person that inspired your discussion.
