Finding Contentment at Work

We all have dreams to advance ourselves in the field we are in. I am no exception. But the stiff competition and the politics at work are some of the things I just cannot take. I cannot do what the Romans do, so to speak. I have been there for 25 years and only got my promotion after 17 years! It is just too stressing to put everything in full details. My friends believe I deserve better than that but I told them that I am in a better place. I thank them for the push and the trust but it is better for me to be where I am now. I believe that God’s plans are better than mine. I want to get ahead but I am in no competition with other people who will try to do what it takes just to get there. It is better to deserve without getting than getting something that you want without deserving! Are you happy and contented with your work?

That makes sense. I was told by one of my past employer as follows: "THE ASSOCIATES IN THIS COMPANY HAVE TWO DIRECTIONS THEY MAY GO, UP IN THE COMPANY OR OUT THE DOOR. NOBODY STAYS IN THEIR SAME JOB FOREVER." so I got the message. I either deal with the added job responsibilities and coped with things as they continued to mount up on all levels, both physically and mentally, or quit or be fired for not working out. Yea, it's hard in some types of business. Up or Out, so to speak.

We come to a point where we need to make choices and decisions.

I have been moving around a bit re: workplace. I believe in God's Providence. Leave it alone, I would never go anywhere but stay put in just one company. As it is, things work out fine and I am contented.

That's good. I am proud that I stayed loyal in just one company for 25 years.

@cherigucchi I have close friends who have stayed with the same company for 3 decades or more. Incredible. But then, they have parents to help out with their kids, or some never have had any kids to worry about.

First of all, this discussion is really great and relevant to a lot of us who work full time and spend a lot of our times working at the office. People have different views or definition of success actually when it comes to their professional life and I for one dont think that you can only be counted as successful if you reach a high position in the company you are working for. I have been through such dilemma myself before and I was in the company 6 years getting nothing of what I feel I deserve for all the contributions I made so I started to hate my job, i feel I am better off someplace else. And I eventually transferred. I have experienced a lot of challenges on their too and realized that getting a promotion or recognized is merely an icing to the cake. I get paid well, I get yearly increase based on performance and I get commendations but it is still not enough to land me a higher position. At my current job, I stopped working to get a promotion but instead worked better by just simply doing what I do best. People recognizes my contributions but well the organization is flat and people do not leave and a lot are older in the company than I am. So its just that I am more happy and content when I stopped struggling and competing. My success is that my colleagues trust my work and they see my value in the organization and it does not need for me to be a manager for them to respect me.

@cherigucchi true. so regardless of the company, or where you are at right now, if you feel that is the kind of life you want, then you are already successful by your definition. It is just a matter of goals being set by each one of us and if it is already met then we have achieved it. it shall depend on you if you want to add more goals or stick with what you already have and just keep it simple and steady. :D

Well explained. That is true that we all have different definitions of what success in life is and only us can determine whether we are or not.

I love your last statement " It is better to deserve without getting than getting something that you want without deserving" We have the same principle in life. I work hard to achieve what I want. I don't want to have/enjoy things at the expense of others.

@cherigucchi I am a very working hard person. Since I started working I never ask for any financial assistance from my parents and siblings. I don't want to bother them with my "wants" in life.

I think I am contented with my present job. I had worked with so many companies. I was not contented working with them. For the reason that I don't like the old practice of nepotism.

That is true. It is your decision to make when you assess that you need to grow more in or out the workplace.
