The Razorback According to the notice in the area, this rock stack along the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Australia, is called the ‘Razorback’. However I’ve also seen the two stacks called Tom and Eva after the survivors of the Loch Ard shipwreck. The sharp edges and bumps along its back are caused by wind-blown spray, which hardens small areas of rock. The softer rock around these erodes away, leaving an uneven surface. Wave energy channelled along the side of the stack carves the deep smooth grooves just above sea level. With one wave every 14 seconds, there’s a lot of erosion over a year, a century or a thousand years. The Razorback once extended much further out to sea. The force of the waves gradually eroded and undercut the base of the stack. Vertical cracks in the rock were widened by rainwater forming a line of weakness. Huge blocks of rock then collapsed into the sea leaving the rock shelf you can see today.

I would love to visit there. Is it accessible to the public, and is it a popular spot for people to visit?

@JudyEv That's a shame that the area is so popular. Wouldn't it be nice if you stumbled across a great beach like that to find that it was totally secluded and not overrun by tourists?

@moffittjc There are some places around the state that I've been to in years gone by before they were 'developed' for tourism. I'm grateful that I was able to see these places before the carparks and cafes went in.

The Great Ocean Road is very, very popular and although we were there in the off season, there were dozens of tourists and tourist buses around.

Yes, Mother Nature doesn't need any help from humans in creating beauty.

Great picture! That happens to our ocean jetties in the U.S. Erosion is a power force of nature. Btw: We have a College Football team from Arkansas called the Razorbacks. Just a coincidence I'm sure

We saw another Razorback just yesterday in the Flinders Range. I'll write about it later. I think the name is usually reserved for a wild pig isn't it?

It's the Southern Ocean. There is nothing between this coast and Antarctica.
