Anyone Use a Thunder-shirt For Their Dog?

My poor little dog Mush has been very anxious with all the thunderstorms we've been having recently. Our sunny day turned dark by mid afternoon and I could hear thunder in the distance. Mush heard it too and even though she was curled up on my lap I could feel her heart racing. She never got this upset until recently when we had thunder one night that literally shook the house. I've heard about thunder-shirts but don't know anyone who uses one. I'd like to get one for Mush but don't want to spend the money if they don't work. What do you think?

I bought a thunderjacket for Ellie a couple of years ago. Its supposed to make them feel like they are being held and calm them. It did nothing for her, in fact, she'd run the other way if she saw you coming at her with it in your hands! Research it a bit more before buying one, because I believe that I paid a little over $50 for hers.

I know they are a bit expensive and I'm willing to pay if it really worked but Mush might be like Ellie and run lol

@Marilynda1225 I wished that it would have worked for her, and we thought that it would as she was pretty young when we bought it, but no...… I think that it has to be a dog that likes to be held tight, as that is what they do.

Many say these shirts really do work, but we don't use them. We do have one dog that is calmer if we wrap him in a towel during storms. Why can't we just use a small shirt for a human on the dogs?

Using a towel sounds like a good idea. I guess the wrapping makes them feel secure

I never used one, but I think my former dog could have benefitted from one. He was just anxious in general. The cat isn't bothered by thunderstorms, but I did have one that was.

I do not know that much about them but I have heard of them. I think the way they supposedly work is that the dog feels comforted by the extra layer on them. I'm guessing it mimics affection and hugs. I feel as if it could also be that the dogs know they'll be okay because of the habit of it. Their owner put the shirt on them the first time and everything was okay and so surely they will be okay the next time. I'm not so sure.

They said dog's hearing is very sensitive. So if there are fireworks and thunders, they are very anxious. Maybe you can make Mush a small house he can curl up which has less sound. I think he will appreciate that.

I'm so glad I don't have to worry about that kind of thing, Ally seems ok with popping or banging noises but boy does the wind scare her, it's always something.

When I wrote for Squidoo, a user wrote a review of those jackets. He had bought one for his dog and it seems that it worked very well.

Never had a dog. I found this online perhaps it can answer your question.
We were curious about the effectiveness of this popular pet gear, so our staffers tried it out.

My brother sells them like hotcakes to many large and small pet stores, so they must work for many dogs.

I used one for my cat. I don't know if it helped. It certainly didn't hurt.

I would try wrapping Mush up tightly in a small blanket. I think a thunder shirt is wrapped closely around them to make a dog feel secure.
