$45.33 + Store Credit (I forget how much)

Well I am back. Can you see the picture? If not , refresh. I went to the thrift store again today. Earlier than usual so I went right as they were opening up. I didn't have to wait as long and I got $45.33 for the DVDs I took and that's the most I've gotten from them so far. They took all of the ones I brought in this time. I also received store credit but I don't remember how much. I do know that combined with the store credit I walked in with, I had $21.xx to spend. I picked up 12 books this time and had about $6.00 left over in store credit to spend next time I go. The books are as follows : With A Vengeance By Eileen Dreyer $1.50 The Historian By Elizabeth Kostova $1.75 True Betrayals By Nora Robers 0.90 Comes The Dark By Michael Prescott $2.95 False Memory By Dean Koontz 0.50 Pandora's Daughter by Iris Johansen 0.25 Caught Dead by Andrew Lanh 0.75 After the Mourning by Barbara Nadel $1.95 Tough Customer By Sandra Brown $1.50 In The Forest Of Harm buy Sallie Bissell $1.95 I'll be Seeing You By Mary Higgins Clark 0.50 The Husband By Dean Koontz 0.05 There were several copies of The Husband and one of them was 10 cents, I found this one for five cents and it was only a little bit more worse for wear than the other. I have read and liked True Betrayals before and so bought it again. Have you read any of these books? Have you read any of these authors? I figure I will go twice more before my trip at the end of July. I've already reached my savings goal so any extra is just icing on the cake. You will see I did not exceed $3.00 with any of the books. My goal is to not purchase anything above $3.00 to make the most out of my vouchers.

I hit our local thrift shops, especially the Goodwill here. Oh and I go to the one in Bill's daughter's home town too. I luck out more often than not and find collectables and even some antiques to put in my booth space at my resale store. I also hit the clothing as I love wearing larger floppy shirts and shorts during the summer, and I'm too cheap to buy Levi's blue jeans at the retail stores. I've been known to walk out of the store staggering under the weight of 4 bags! It's been a Godsend after the fire! I lost everything in the house fire that took my home October 2, 2017. All that was left were the clothes on my back and my hand bag. Bill and I had gone to town for the usual doctor's appointments and came home to my house burning down. They had blocked the street with a sheriff's car and were checking ID's. I promptly said piss on this noise (pardon my French) and jumped out of Bill's car and raced down the street to save my animals. It took 5 burly firemen to hold me back and the Captain got the choice job of telling me that they had all perished, but didn't suffer....no I got to suffer...but I am thankful for that. Any how Bill told me later after the shock had cleared a bit that he NEVER saw me move that fast!!! He went on to say that if they had an Olympic event for homes burning down I would win the half mile dash in 10 seconds flat. Even the sheriff's officer was impressed and told Bill he had never seen anyone run as fast as I did...but I diverge. I have been slowly replacing lost items from the thrift shop here. I love hitting it the first of the week when they have the 50/75% off days. I seldom buy anything there for full price unless it's such a good deal that I can't leave it behind! I also design and make teddy bears so I watch the thrift shops for good used fur coats and also acrylic fur coats I've found some beauties in the past and hope to find a lot more. Oh, we also have a Goodwill outlet store. That's where everything that didn't sell in the "retail" stores goes before it is further processed. You'd love it because you could walk out with the whole library for less than $10. The books sell for between 10 cents and a dollar. Clothes sell by the pound, last time I was down there they were a dollar a pound! And furniture...sofas for as little as $10 and in good shape too! I found a lot of great stuff down there and may go back again when I get another car. I have to thank you! I couldn't figure out why my appointment with the doctor had been moved from the first of the month to the 15th area. I just figured it out, with your help!!! It was to save stress on me! Those people are real sweethearts! They know I'm still in the early stages of PTSD and they are trying to keep the levels for me way down...of course! They can track the stress in my blood pressure which they make sure they check every month when I come in. I peeked at their screen on the computer and there is a listing from October 2, 2017 (which is in red) through yesterday...and there are nearly double the amount of blood pressure readings than what there should be for 9 months. They have a hook up with all my doctors and every one of them is checking my pressure. Yesterday it was 169 over 97. The nurse said "That's not bad". Noooo, not when my normal is 123/80. Of course they knew I was stressed out over the fire back in our area...come to think of it so did Bill my boyfriend. Now the day is starting to make sense. Oh excuse me, I should explain. When I have a bit of confusion over something like the events yesterday I find it helps to discuss them with someone. Lucky you, you drew the short straw. But I do have to thank you a ton, I was wondering about that yesterday when we made our appointments. We used to go in on the first of each month, now it's around the middle of the month. It's the PTSD and the fire. Thank you so much! Happy shopping! We're going up north soon and I get to hit the thrift shops up there. Bill uses it as a barometer to check and see how I'm feeling. If I want to go to the thrift shop I'm okay, but if I say no there's something wrong and worm it out of me. Thank you again!

Well I am very glad that I could be of help. I am so sorry to hear about the fire and of course I completely understand how fast you were moving to try and save your fur babies. I completely understand your grief over losing them but I am also thankful that they didn't suffer. Thrift stores are definitely a gem to have around. I grew up around thrift stores and so I learned a little on how to find the best bargains and I try to do that even today. We do have a goodwill outlet store here or what I call "the biig goodwill" but it's in a high traffic area and a bit of a drive to get to. The same with our salvation army store. It's amazing what people discard without seeing the value in it or the way you might repurpose the item. I'm glad to hear that you have such a good boyfriend and a good team of doctors who help you with recovering from that drastic loss. I hope you find lots of good bargains at the thrift shops up North. I'll be heading up that way myself soon but only for a weekend and I doubt we will have time to visit any thrift shops.

@ScribbledAdNauseum You are sooooo lucky! You have a Salvation Army store! I love those too. We had them in Montana but you had to be careful because they were more expensive than Goodwill. Our outlet store for Goodwill is a long drive too. It's about 75 miles from home so it isn't one that I make on a whim. I won't make Bill do that drive for me for love nor money. Plus I've been pretty tied up with everything after the fire. I was referred to a psychologist but I haven't gone yet. I really should because I think it has a lot to do with my outlook and just general health too. But again it's the drive to town and I don't have a car right now, although I'm searching. I'm looking for another little Subaru station wagon. When the time is right it will come to me. Most of the "green" bears come from acrylic coats and vests. I have a huge bag of bears cut out waiting to get sewn together. I finally got a replacement sewing machine for strictly the bears last week. Bill was willing to let me use his deceased wife's Bernina sewing machine but I couldn't do that in all good conscience. First I promised his daughter I wouldn't use the machine unless absolutely necessary, and secondly I knew his past wife and I liked her a lot. I just can't bring myself to help myself to her machine....So, I happened to luck out last week and one of the members here on the Lot offered me her machine at a wonderful price and I bought it and have already used it and plan to use "Marj" as much as possible. (I named the machine after her mother) Right now it's getting over whatever bug I picked up and doing a bit of house cleaning. Sometime in the next 6 days I plan to clean the living-room and kitchen carpets. Again when I feel a bit better. We're going to have to stay in touch and share "finds" from the thrift shop. I had started being too proud to buy clothing in thrift shops until I found some brand new stuff that still had the store tags on them and then started checking labels. My mind changed in a split second! Happy shopping and tons of hugs! (Hope you might get to sneak in a thrift shop...withdrawal is horrible and driving by and imagining all the great bargains waving at you...... Well give it a try. Hugs

@BearArtistLady I do not drive either but that's more borne out of the anxiety and nervousness on the road than anything else. I've never had a license but that's not for lack of trying. Like I said, too much nervousness behind the wheel. I don't know how often I will get to go to a thrift store as I am a bit tight on money now but am hoping to have some money to spend in the coming months. I am hoping to have a little time to go into a thrift store or two but the area we are going is one that none of us have been in before. We also plan to visit a friend's aunt if we can. All will tell when we arrive I guess. I don't have the crafting skills to make bears or anything like it. My mom was the one who was great with crocheting, quilting and she even crocheted clothes for bears and dolls alike. I didn't get that creative gene from her unfortunately. I've had to visit a physchiatrist in the past and it wasn't something that I was pleased about doing. Once all was said and done though I was glad to have gone and it helped me out tremendously. My reason was more borne from my upbringing than anything else though.

I think the only book in that group I MAY have read is the Mary Higgins Clark book. I'd have to check my reading list to see if I have read that one. You are lucky that you get money for your stuff. Our used book stores only give us store credit to take our books, not cash. Thrift stores are mainly donations as they are charitable organizations. Not many places to sell stuff here unless you have a garage sale.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I have not checked outside of town... not that I get out of town very often because of the lack of vehicle access. I should check the other towns but all businesses are in the business of making money. Would love to have a store open... any store... we need more stores, we need more businesses, NOT more houses.

@patgalca Our problem here is that we are getting too many businesses opening up. They are planning to build another mini shopping strip not too far from me and yet there are some places that have empty spaces for stores and store fronts. There is an old shopping center right down the road that is completely empty. The building is old and I know that one business within had air conditioning problems. I guess there is a lot of work that needs done in the shopping center because it has been up for sale for years and there's been no takers. We are also getting houses built all the time. There's no real balance and too much building up of things.

There are two other stores that I have been to and plan to go again. One is just a book store and I think there's is a trade in type deal as well. The other is similar to the one I go to now. I haven't been to either of those in years and I don't really remember all that much about the one that is similar to the one I go to now. I call it a thrift store, the store itself may not classify itself as "thrift". They obviously do buy / sell / trade there. This store is "mom and pop" in that there are only a few of them around. Hopefully you will have a few places opening up that will do similar to what these stores do in my area. Do the surrounding towns not have anything? I technically have to go "out of town" when I do these trades. It's only about 12 minutes away but still considered another town.

I bought a book in Spanish once. I used to be a little proficient in the language but I forgot most of what I've learned.

@marguicha I used to know enough to ask for things or interact a little bit. The one that taught me the most was a friend who turned into an acquaintance. She didn't mature as the rest of us did and her behavior was toxic so we decided to sever ties wit her.

I have I'll Be Seeing You, The Husband, Pandora's Daughter and Comes the Dark. I'm a big Dean Koontz Fan and just read his The Good Guy. It was a fun book that kept you entertained. A bit different then his normal horror but I liked it.

I've read one of his books before I think but my sister is / was the fan of his. I figured I would give him a try and Pandora's Daughter definitely caught my eye the most.

That's not bad at all what you made for selling this stuff.

Yes most of what I sold were series of things. Like more ER dvds. I sold a Matrix collection. Some of what I sold were considered the "collector's edition" which is why I think I got a little more for them. I think I have sold nearly all of the serials of things though and now it will all be just plain movies.

Yes, isn't it great? I know these are popular authors and I am sure the books are worth much more.

I am trying to get out of my comfort zone as far as authors go. I figure no harm / no foul because if I don't end up liking it I can sell it back to them or another shop.
