My thumb is healing

I don't remember if I ever even posted about the thumb debacle. I cut it really badly on Saturday night. A secretary at work wanted us to collect can tabs over the summer for some charity thing, so I decided to do so. I was trying to get a tab off of a can of cheddar soup when I was making my mac and cheese, and I cut my left thumb very deeply. It bled and bled and bled horribly to the point where I thought I was going to have to call an ambulance. We had been out drinking earlier in the day so I knew I wouldn't have been able to drive myself to the ER. Anyway, I decided that I couldn't be bothered to go to the ER for stitches and just settled for doing band-aids and Neosporin antibiotic ointment. It was very sensitive for the first 2 or 3 days and would bleed crazily if it was hit the wrong way, but then it settled down. I realized over the weekend that I hadn't had a tetanus shot in over 10 years, so I got myself to my employer's health clinic for one on Tuesday--3 days after the cut happened. I figured that I wasn't down for getting lockjaw this summer, so I called the clinic and asked if they did tetanus shots and they said they did. When I got there, the doctor looked at the slice, said that it was healing nicely, and went on her way. A nurse came in to give me the shot which was actually a combo for diptheria, pertussis, and tetanus. My left shoulder has been sore for 2 days from that shot, but I can still easily open my jaw so I'm happy for that. Today I took the band-aid off of my thumb and was happy to see that the slice seems to have almost closed up at least. The human body is amazing.

Wow and ouch! So glad you are healing well. My husband would love it if I developed lockjaw.

@DianneN I talk too much at work and I don't like to argue with him, so I am usually quiet at home.

Glad to hear the thumb has almost healed up. Glad no lockjaw or anything else occurred from it.

I hate when I cut myself like that, I don`t do the e.r. either. I think it was last year I got another tetanus, it was the combo too. How long are the shots good for? 8-10 years?

10 years but they usually will give you a new one after 5 years if you are at the ER or doctor for stitches or antibiotics for a bite, cut, etc. My last shot was for a cat bite over 10 years ago.

Yup. I pulled it off and then was holding it and trying to get the tab off. Cut my thumb something awful.

"I cut my left thumb very deeply" That's sound like so painful. Indeed, our body is amazing because of the ability to heal itself. I'm glad that your wound is kinda okay now. I hope it'll be totally okay soon. Be extra careful next time.

Weighing out the pro's and con's I'd definatly go with a shot over lockjaw. Can you imagine having to purify food in order to eat it? (I had a jaw injury and let me tell you, liquified food sucks)
