“Here she comes now sayin’ Mony Mony Shoot ‘em down turn around, come on Mony” Tommy James and the Shondells have never been given credit for being a great group. Formed in 1959, the band enjoyed a terrific stretch of success between 1966 and 1970 with big hits “Hanky Panky,” “I Think We’re Alone Now,” “Crimson and Clover,” “Mony Mony” and “Crystal Blue Persuasion.” Today, cover versions by Joan Jett (“Crimson and Clover”), Tiffany (“I Think We’re Alone Now”) and Billy Idol (“Mony Mony”) are better remembered than the originals. Lack of longevity is a reason for being forgotten. In 1970, James collapsed on stage nearly dying from his drug addiction and caused him to exit the group. He returned as a solo artist with a few hits (most notably “Draggin’ the Line”) in the 70s and since 1980 been traveling the nostalgia circuit. Written by James, Bo Gentry, Bobby Bloom and Ritchie Cordell, “Mony Mony” was inspired by James’ seeing the M.O.N.Y. sign atop the Mutual of New York building. “Mony Mony” (1968) reached US #3 and UK #1. Billy Idol is an 80s legend. He left popular post punk group Generation X and went solo with great success. He first recorded “Mony Mony” in 1981 for the “Don’t Stop” ep. His 1987 live version is the single going to Billboard #1. “Mony Mony” is also heard on the “Vital Idol” album.

"Hanky Panky" was one of the first English songs I ever heard. There was a fellow on the street who played his music so loud and we heard that song blaring from his balcony. T J and S had some great hits. .

I remember this song. It reminds me of when I was at a disco club in Guadalajara, Mexico
