I find that they sell two types of blank DVD. They both are based on being Single Sided, Single Layer & have about 4.7 GB memory capacity. The ones that are Double Sided DVDs have about 8.4 GB memory capacity. The ones that are Dual-Layered, Single Sided have the same capacity, but there are certain flaws in their effectiveness. For instance, I have used a Dual-Layer, Single Sided DVD+R disc, formatted as a FLASH DRIVE to record data and modify or erase data to and from it. At times, there were write errors that resulted in total loss of data. I then decided to stick with they 4.7 GB Single Sided, Single Layer discs with 4.7 GB capacity and use them as FLASH or alternately use some to format and store information on them permanently. The first, FLASH method is good if you want to add and/or remove files, the second, non-rewriteable format method that finishes the data that prevents erasure is the best way to insure against data loss. Below is an article from HowtoGeek on line for you to take a look at. But is there a difference between the blank DVD+R and the DVD-R Single Sided, Single Layered discs? I have yet to find the answer to this question.
When burning a CD or DVD with Windows, you’ll be asked whether you want to use a Live File System or a Mastered disc format. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages.
