Huge Redwood Tree Root Balls

Over the course of thousands of years, some of the redwood trees in the Humboldt Redwood State Park in far northern California have fallen over. Their root balls are amazing. First, they are relatively shallow, considering they have been holding up trees as high as a 30 to 35 story office building! Second, they are wider than any root balls I have ever seen from other trees. You can see how wide this one is by comparing it to the man standing next to it. He looks tiny next to that root ball! Have you ever seen a tree root ball which was larger than this one?

I have not been fortunate enough to go as far out west as California but Keith loves to talk about the Redwood trees. He was a truck driver at one point and got to see so much of the state.

@DeborahDiane Keith really enjoyed driving a truck. He has talked about going back to it if his job here at John Deere does not work out but I would not want him gone away from home so much.

@Shellyann36 - Yes, that is the only downside to being a truck driver. They are gone from home so much. It is hard on the families.

@Shellyann36 - I have known a number of truck drivers. They have a hard life, but they do get to see a lot of the country!

I haven't seen such a huge root ball. However It is really shallow in proportion to its height.

@DeborahDiane I am not sure if the "starter" is the sapling. If only those small redwoods will be able to thrive in China. It is said that redwoods can live up to five thousand years.

@changjiangzhibin89 - Yes, those root balls are very shallow considering how tall the trees are. By the way, we chatted with someone who ships small "starter" redwood trees to other states and countries. He said that China is a major buyer of his starter trees and he had recently shipped over $1.5 million worth of small redwood trees to China. Perhaps, in 1000 years, there will be large groves of giant redwoods in China, too!

@changjiangzhibin89 - Yes, I hope that they do thrive in China. I'm sure there must be parts of China that have a climate similar to the one in Northern California. I would be thrilled if they thrive and are still around in thousands of years. That would be wonderful!
