Oh How I Miss The Beach

Curious Gull

For reasons I've already explained (hip) I haven't been to the beach yet this summer. The last time I was there was in April during Easter Break from school. It was a warm day and there were quite a few people on the beach, in bathing suits, soaking up the sun. I took several pictures while I was there. Ostensibly, the pictures were the purpose of the trip. Walking around on the beach was a challenge with my hip the way it was then, but Aleve and determination let me get around enough to take some nice shots. I will share some of them here with some of my future posts. This first one you see at the top of this post, the seagull by the surf, is available on Pixabay if you'd like to download it and use if for something. There is no charge, of course. I have several other pictures there to that you might enjoy. It stopped raining here but the sky is darkening and I believe there is more precipitation to come.

@LadyDuck The sea birds at the beaches here are not as wary of people as one might expect. They are protected by law and anyone harassing them is subject to a stiff fine. I enjoy the fact that they don't immediately fly away when I approach. It's allowed me many nice photos.

I wonder if he thought my camera was a very odd beak.

I don't think I could ever live too far from the ocean. Even where I am now, as much as I enjoy living here, often seems too far.

@responsiveme I am also very fond of rivers. I learned to sail on a river and named my small publishing company River Sailor Literary.

Where have you been? You been at the beach this whole time? Been a while. Glad you enjoyed the day and was able to get some cool shots.

@crossbones27 Other than the planning teaching 4th grade is great. I like teaching several subjects a day instead of 1 or 2. It makes the day go by more quickly and keeps the kids engaged.

I wish I'd been at the beach this whole time. Alas, I was busy with the new job at a new school teaching a new grade and the teacher I replaced left no guide or lesson plans behind so I had to create everything from scratch. Very time consuming. I've also been writing.

I love the beach too but haven't been there in years. Can't blame it on anything other than it would take at least 3 hours to get there.

I grew up there but didn't have the good sense to stay when I graduated high school. Now it's from 90 minutes to 2 hours depending on which stretch of beach I'm going to.

@Marilynda1225 I know what you mean. Also, I've priced homes at the beach. Some of the houses a few blocks off the ocean might be within reach. Nothing near the water is even within the realm of possibility.

@DWDavis I've always dreamed of owning a house on or at the beach. But lately with all the terrible weather I don't know if it's as enticing as it once was.

My ultimate place to live would be in the mountains on the shore of a sizeable lake. Best of both worlds.

@Ronrybs I had the good fortune of spending time in New Hampshire between high school and the Army and the house I lived in was what they called a winter rental. We had it from the Tuesday after Labor Day until the Friday before Memorial Day Weekend. It was right on a big spring fed lake formed by retreating glaciers and the water was so clear you could make out the bottom even at depths of fifty feet or more. That is one of the few places I would go and live outside of North Carolina.

This is a beautiful photo of a lovely beach and I like the seagull. My son is in a wheelchair and it is hard to move it on a sandy beach. I love tropical beaches and we went to one in Sri Lanka. It was exhausting to carry my son to a shady spot. My daughter enjoyed paddling in the sea. By the afternoon the beach got way too hot so we left it. We visited another tropical beach on Bohol Island in the Philippines. The weather was much cooler there I am pleased to say. We live just three miles from beaches however swimming isn't possible. There is one sheltered cove where it is possible to swim or take out a dingy.

Wouldn't it be nice if the resorts offered wheel chairs with balloon tires that would easily traverse the sand? I can only imagine how beautiful the beaches of Sri Lanka and Bohol Island were. Like most Americans, I'm sad to say, I haven't seen much of the world outside my own country other than a few visits to Canada and the 22 months I spent stationed in South Korea. With retirement approaching, I am hoping to correct that.

Yes, I wish we could have wheelchairs with balloon like tyres that could easily transverse the sand. My son's wheelchair got a puncture on our way to an appointment on Monday. Yesterday we went on a day trip to a zoo. The wheel's tyre will be sorted on Thursday. It is lovely that you spent 22 months in South Korea. Canada is a beautiful country. I visited it in 2010. I hope you can go to see more of the world.

We are finally going to beach trips again - it had been a while. Hubby thought his back would get tweaked again while walking on the uneven sand - and it probably would have had he not strengthened up with his PT exercises. What a relief to finally be better. I hope you can make it to the beach soon!!

@DWDavis Getting to any beach is a good thing . Hope you have a lovely time at the beach with your friend! We just came back from a beach trip that was very much unlike our beaches too - further north - and thank you - Hubby feels very fortunate his back held up well for the trip!

I am traveling to a beach in a couple days to see a friend who is down from up north for a few days. It isn't "my" beach, but it is a nice beach. It is good to know your husband is doing so much better.

I love the beach, and have spent most of my life on the beach, but I currently live inland about an hour and a half from the nearest beach, so I don't quite get there as much these days as I'd like. However, my daughter and I went to the beach a couple of weekends ago, and it was so hot, humid and miserable that we both decided we couldn't make an entire day of it. We showered off, cleaned ourselves up a little bit, and went and walked around the air-conditioned outlet malls nearby! haha

I know what you mean about the heat. Last year when I visited the beach I only lasted a couple hours before I was ready to find someplace indoors to hang out. I don't know if I'm just older, or if the heat and humidity really are worse, but I used to be able to spend the whole day on the beach and all night on the pier. Not anymore.

@DWDavis I know exactly what you mean! I miss the days where I could be at the beach from sunrise to sunset and feel absolutely great the entire day. Now, I barely can last an hour or two and I just want to get the hell out of the heat! lol

My wife once turned down a transfer because the job was in a landlocked state and she knew I wouldn't want to live that far from the ocean. I've lived in 6 states over my life and they've all been on a coast.
