Record Breaking Heat Wave Around the World

It is hot in Southern California, with temperatures in many places exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Near Palm Springs, the temperatures are over 119 degrees. Fires are burning near Yosemite National Park, causing the park service to ask people to leave because of the poor air quality. The Arctic Circle is burning in northern Sweden. Fires are burning in Greece, forcing people to have to flee into the sea to reach safety. Suicide rates are higher when temperatures soar, causing officials to estimate that there will be 20,000 additional suicides in the United States and Mexico over the next four years. How is the weather where you live? Are you facing the consequences of a heat wave? Or, are you dealing with the heavy rain which is happening in the Eastern United States? One way or the other, it seems as if the weather is extreme. It is still July, but I am already looking forward to October!

@crossbones27 - I'm sure it is very hot in Redlands, since it was hot when we were in Sacramento a week ago. I hope August is better, but I think that is just wishful thinking.

Hot here. A person's lawnmower sparked a fire yesterday in my area but fire persons put the blaze out before there was real trouble. Wind was gusting this afternoon and I find that scary at this time of the year.

@DeborahDiane It was so strange this afternoon. I fell asleep in my chair, calm outside and hot, cat on my lap. He freaked so I woke and looked out the window to see tumbleweeds flying by high in the air.

@sallypup - Wow! I can see how the tumbleweeds could have scared your cat. I hope the winds do not spread any fires up in Washington. That would be sad.

@sallypup - I'm glad they got the fire out quickly. I agree that gusty winds can be a huge problem, once a fire does get started!

We are enjoying the rains and it is cool here. It will be that way until October and hot weather will then follow

The situation is horrible in Greece, they have found 76 bodies until now, but they fear there are many more.

@DeborahDiane Even where you live is scary. We had a serious fire on the hills around Monte-Carlo in the 80's. I remember that we could not breath inside the apartments. I was so scared that we decided to spend the night on the beach, to be close to the water... just in case.

@LadyDuck - That is so heartbreaking. I cannot imagine how scary it would be to have a fire hit while on vacation in a foreign country. You would not know where to go or what to do.

@LadyDuck - Yes, it is risky where we live, mainly because we live just a few blocks from a 20,000 acre wilderness area which has caught on fire in the past and burned hundreds of nearby homes. We try to always be on alert. We get text messages and automatic phone messages whenever there is a brush fire in the wilderness area, just so we know what is going on. If a fire starts, we try to go somewhere safer. In order to get to the nearest beach, however, we have to drive right through the middle of the wilderness area, so that is not always the best option for us. I can understand why you were scared when there was a fire in Monte-Carlo. I have a healthy respect for fire.

We're flooded out right now because of the deluge of rain that hit us over the weekend. Our rivers are expected to crest today, and remain over flood stage until Sunday. As far as heat, a freak dip in the jet stream (which is what caused all the rain) also brought us cooler temperatures. I'm not going to complain too much, because I am enjoying the fact that we have been below 90 degrees for the past three days!

@DeborahDiane I'd rather have all this rain than be in a drought situation. I'll try to send a little rain your way, but I don't want to give it all up! lol

@moffittjc - I'm glad you are cooler and, if you and your family are safe during the flooding, then that is good. We could sure use some rain in California. Could you send some our way?

I remember the Swedish fires last summer. We could smell them in Norway when the wind was coming from the east. Right then I think we were all hoping we could get some of the heavy rains that pestered other parts of the world.

@Torunn - The huge wildfires which were going on around the world last year were awful. California is trying to clean up its forests right now to minimize the risk this coming summer. I hope they are successful.

Thanks for sharing the weather around the world, in Israel, the weather is humid and hot, this is summer. I don't like it so much, I like staying in doors or at least under the shadows, having a ventilator, air conditioner, water to cool my skin, and remind me to get sun glasses that blocks uva and uvb radiation.

@DeborahDiane It gets better, the autumn is coming, the sun starts shine later and later each day, and goes down sooner everyday. We will have some more fun, I'm sure.

@wolfgirl569 - It sounds like what happens in California sometimes. We either seem to have no rain, or we have flooding and mudslides. There doesn't seem to be a happy medium with rain.

I've read about all the fires and heat waves, we've had a hot summer but rain almost every day. it doesn't look good for the environment.I'm afraid we are in for even worse. I'm looking forward to fall too, much as I love summer.

We actually had a bit of cool down in southern Illinois which was nice. But we quickly had to turn the air back on. I am not going to complain. I complain all throughout winter and I am NOT ready for winter to come back any time soon.

@porwest - Yes, the winters are milder than in Wisconsin and the longer summers are nice. I think the winters in Missouri are milder and the summers warmer than they were when I was a kid. You are right about the humidity, though. All those creeks and rivers produce a lot of humidity.

@DeborahDiane I have been in the St. Louis metro on the Illinois side of the river for about 4 or 5 years, transplanted from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and I am STILL not used to the heat and humidity. But I DO like the longer summers here. And the winters here are fairly mild.

@JamesHxstatic - One of my friends who is 79 and a die-hard Republican told me the other day that she may "re-think her position on climate change." You could have knocked me over with a feather. Perhaps reality is starting to sink in, at least with a few Republicans. They seem to be pretty stubborn, for the most part, however.
