Mailbox snooper

Some days ago my mother went for a walk with her dog. Just before she got back to her house she noticed a man who opened all of the mailboxes and looked inside. She watched him from the other side of the sidewalk, and he also opened her mailbox. The Danish mailboxes are locked, in most cases you can't remove the content without a key. He didn't remove anything he simply looked inside in every single mailbox. She didn't want to confront him in case he carried a knife or other kinds of weapons. She told us about her experience and we discussed what his motives could be. It is possible that it was just a nosey person. But he could have a darker motive. A lot of people are away on vacation at the moment and maybe he was trying to find out which families were away from their homes. What do you think?

I feel like you are probably right, it might be that he was trying to figure out who wasn't at home. You say that mailboxes in Denmark are locked. Over here we have those types for apartment complexes and also for some roads. Up in the mountains, one of my aunts mailboxes are like that as well. She lives in a mobile home and her entire road has small square mailboxes that are only opened via a key. Are these the same type in Denmark? I only ask because I wonder how the man was able to see inside. Is there a slit where he could peer in?

Yes, there is a slit in the Danish mailboxes. It is possible to see what it is inside, but you can't open the mailbox without the key. The expensive mailboxes have two rooms - one room for mail (locked) and one room for newspapers (not locked) The most common type only has one room, and mother's mailbox only has one room. Yes, I think it possible that he wanted to find out which homes were empty. A lot of burglaries happen in July and August when many people are away.

@Porcospino I think she should alert the police about this. He may be going and doing this all across your town.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I was thinking the same thing. Maybe he is doing it in other places as well. My mother's house has never been burgled and she has a dog, but it is not nice to know that someone walks around in the neighbourhood and checks the mailboxes.

I also think that he maybe trying to see of any of the mails has check on it. But most likely, he is trying to know indeed wjich house has no owners in it at the moment so he can rob.

I also think that he wanted to find out which houses were empty. Some weeks ago someone tried to climb over the wall between my mother's house and the house behind her house. I don't know if it was the same person, but my mother has installed a burglar alarm in case they come back.

@SIMPLYD She got the alarm a few weeks ago, and she feels less scared now. It is not easy to enter the house from the backyard because there are others houses, walls and fences, but if you really want to it is possible to climb over the wall, so an alarm is important. Now she has both an alarm and a dog.

@Porcospino That is scary. Your mother should really have a burglar alarm.

I would not trust him. If she sees him again I would report him.

I don't trust him either. Maybe he is planning to break into the empty houses.

This may well be the case. A full letter box shows that someone is away on holiday. One should always ask a neighbour to empty it when one is away.

Yes, a full mailbox shows that the person is away. We don't get many snail mail letters today compared to the past, but we still ask a friend to empty the maibox when we are away.

That was also my first thought. I think he might have been trying to find out where the empty houses are, because many people are away at the moment.

Yes, I think he has bad motives. Maybe he's a thief or something like that

I think that is possible. Maybe he checked the mailboxes because he wanted to see who were away. July and August are the summer months in my country and many people go on vacation right now.

@Jessabuma It is not nice to know that someone walks around the in neighborhood, and there have been buglaries in the past, so it is important to be extra careful.
