“Suspicious Minds” (1969) holds the distinction of being Elvis Presley’s final #1 hit. Written by Mark James, the song about mistrust in a relationship is considered one of the King’s best. James co-wrote “Always on My Mind” and other songs for Elvis including “Moody Blue.” “We can’t go on together With suspicious minds And we can’t build our dreams On suspicious minds” Among the numerous covers is the 1986 version by Fine Young Cannibals featuring lead singer Roland Gift. FYC was a good British new wave band with a touch of ska. The charismatic Gift (he did some acting also) had a fine soulful voice and on this track, backup vocals are provided by Jimmy Somerville who was lead singer of Bronski Beat and the Communards. From their self titled album, “Suspicious Minds” hit Billboard Dance #23 and established FYC on alternative radio.

I had a feeling this might show up. Roland Gift has a very unique voice, and it's a shame FYC never made it bigger in the States. "Ever Fallen in Love" is a cover, too...but that was originally a Buzzcocks song, so that wouldn't go too far off the alternative path to begin with.

I can't imagine anyone doing a better job of this one than the King.

I really enjoy Elvis's version of Suspicious Minds. I don't want to ruin my enjoyment of the song. I'll pass on the Cannibals. It might "drive me crazy."
