My husband and I are planning a trip to Portugal. We haven't decided exactly when we going to travel, but it will be after this summer. We want to spend some time in Lisbon and we also want visit other parts of the country. I have started making a list of the sights we want to visit in Lisbon, but we haven't decided which of the other places we want to visit. I have a guidebook from Lonely Planet and it covers the most important places in Portugal, but I am also going to look for information online. Have you been to Portugal? Which places did you visit?

My husband and I have been there three times. We like the country and the people. We were in the south at the Algarve once, mainly for swimming and relaxing, and twice in Lisbon from where we travelled in the vicinity, for example to Sintra. You can find good tips in your guide book I am sure. Public transportation is good, you can go by train or tram if the destination isn't far. Taxis aren't expensive. A must is Belem, a kind of suburb of Lisbon, where *everyone* goes to eat the wonderful pastries at *the* pasteleria. You'll find it, people queue in front of it.

My husband visited Portugal many years ago. He spent some time in the south of Portugal. I have never been to Portugal. Sintra is one of the places that is mentioned in my guidebook. It is not that far from Lisbon, so it would be possible to visit it while we are staying in Lisbon. We plan on visiting Belem. I would like to see Mosteiro dos Jeronimos and the tower in Belem.

Yes I have been to Portugal and I have loved the place. The part I liked less is the Algarve, there are the beaches and many tourists. I loved the city of Porto and nearby Braga. Always near Porto the town of Amarante. Be sure to visit SINTRA, it's about 30 minutes from Lisbon. Another place that I loved is Coimbra, it's a riverfront city where you can visit the old Roman settlement. Stay at least two full days in Lisbon to visit the city.

I hope that we will be able to spend 3 or 4 days in Lisbon. I have started making a list of the sights we would like to visit while we are there. Sintra is mentioned in my guidebook, and it sounds like a good place for a daytrip. I haven't heard of Coimbra, I will look for something information about that

@LadyDuck I found some articles about Coimbra and some photos. I didn't read it all yet, but it looks interesting. My husband visited Porto many years ago. He didn't stay very long and he would like to visit it again.

@ridingbet When we spend time in other countries we notice the differences between those countries and our own country. Sometimes the differences surprise me. When I was living in Italy my Italian friends told me that he had visited Denmark as tourist and he was impressed to see how clean the country was. There are people from my country who throw their garbage in the streets, but compared to some of the countries I have seen it is quite clean here.

@Porcospino Kuwait is an open Arab country. what i mean is we can go out wearing denim pants and shirts, and not the usual hijab or fully covered body attire. it is also clean, and garbage bins are everywhere. when i had my vacation back home, i carried that practice of throwing my trash in waste baskets, and this was not the case before where people throw their trash everywhere

I visited Lagos in the Algarve which was very pretty with an old town and a golden sandy beach. I went to the amazing capital city Lisbon which I found very picturesque and grand. That was my disabled son's first trip overseas in 2007. My children are now 11 years old and 9 years old. We will be visiting Porto and Madeira Island. We will fly there on Easy Jet and come back home on Avios Points.

I look forward to seeing Lisbon and other places in Portugal When are you going to visit Porto and Madeira Island? I have used Easy Jet in the past (from the UK to Spain) My husband and I looked at some package tours to Madeira island last year, but we didn't find anything that we liked and we usually travel independently, so we didn't buy that one.

I've been there a few times on cruises, but only for a few hours each time. We couldn't go far afield because of time restrictions, but Lisbon is lovely.

A cruise sounds really nice. It is a different way to travel since you don't have a lot of time at each place, but it still sounds like a nice way to see different places. I look forward to visiting Lisbon and other places in Portugal.
