Christmas in July

Several businesses in our area held Christmas in July sales this week. Since I have never heard of this marketing idea, I think it must be new. However, it's a great idea. The ads featured pictures of Christmas trees, snow covered cottages, snowmen, candy canes and other things which are usually reserved for December advertisements. It is a nice change from the typical summer sale. With our current heat wave, it was actually refreshing to look at pictures of snowmen and Christmas trees on the ads that came to my home. Have you seen Christmas in July ads in your area?

No, I haven't seen any this early. I'm one of those people who think Christmas should start the week before the actual day.

@DeborahDiane Yes, I'm almost bored with it before it arrives.

@jaboUK - Ha ha! I'm glad I'm not the only one. By the time I take down the tree and put away the decorations, I feel completely worn out from all the festivities. It gets to be too much!

@jaboUK - Yes, I do think we stretch Christmas out too long. It gets a bit overdone.

Thanks God no! After the craziness of a few years ago, now all the stores must not start to decorate for Christmas (Halloween, Easter or whatever), more than 30 days before the event. Thirty day is long enough, more it is ridiculous.

I remember the months-long Christmas preparations myLot members from Asia wrote about last year. I'm considering taking a break till after Christmas! It was enough to become a heathen.

@LadyDuck - I agree completely. Thirty days of celebrating any holiday is plenty of time.

Oh yes and QVC has been doing this for as long as I can remember. I always start shopping early but I use this time of year more for things like decorations for Christmas unless I see something I think will make a great gift.

@BelleStarr - Ahhh! So I think that QVC may have started the whole thing! Interesting. Now that my kids are grown, I don't start shopping as early. I send more gift certificates or things on their wish lists.

@DeborahDiane The grandkids (especially the boys) want gifts, I make them a big bag of stuff every year, hoodies, snacks, things I know they will like.

@BelleStarr - I always add at least one gift to the check I give each of them every year! Hoodies are popular with the teen boy. I never thought of including snacks, too. Thanks for the idea! Our eight grandkids range in age from newborn baby to 25 years old. Lots of different gifts to buy!

We went to a wedding about 26 years ago where the bride was Canadian and the groom American. They had it on July 2, which is the day after our Canada Day and 2 days before your holiday. Their theme for the wedding was Christmas in July. And here we all thought at the time that it was an American thing because we had never ever heard of it before...…..

@DeborahDiane I want to say that they met on a cruise that they were on over the Christmas holidays. And with guests from both sides of the border, choosing a wedding date with a holiday that all guests could use to their benefit for travelling was ideal. They had Christmas trees with little white lights at the hall and centrepieces that you'd see at Christmas time, and each guest had a little "gift" at the table. It was something that the groom and bride made as a token. It was a lot of fun. And then we all went outside and there were fireworks part-way thru the reception.

@Juliaacv - What a fun idea for a summer wedding! I love the idea. I wonder where the couple came up with the idea? It was a long time ago, but it would be fun to know.

They start early but I haven't seen any Christmas trees yet. It won't be long. Usually when summer clothes are marked down, Christmas trees come out with all the trimmings.

@RubyHawk - I think that is their goal ... to trick people into shopping early and often, so we spend more than we planned to.

@DeborahDiane I suppose the earlier they it put it out the earlier people will start Christmas shopping. And we will spend more than otherwise.

I don't really know of too many places who do it around here. Honestly, I prefer waiting until December to think about Christmas.

I will scream if I start seeing Christmas stuff now ! But I have seen Halloween stuff already - and some autumn Thanksgiving stuff on the shelves . . . I am not ready for that kind of earliness!

No Christmas sales in July here, but I am familiar with the concept from watching the home shopping network on TV. I have enough trouble with Christmas in December Hard to "wrap" my head around shopping for presents now. Need that cold weather to inspire me...
