The earliest ever for schools to start!

Back when I was in school, the school year would start right at the end of August or right after Labor Day and the Summer Break would start right at the end of May or beginning of June.
That is how it was for a good period of time when my kids were in Elementary School. Then when they got into Middle & High School, the dates were moved up and they would start school around August 10 and get out for Summer in mid to late May.
Now, I just learned in our local paper that the schools here will start on August 2 and the schools in Atlanta will start August 1 ! I am thinking the reason is because they are giving more holidays throughout the year. They give some days for Fall Break which they never did before.

"Fall Break" sounds like a farce to me. They won't even be through the first semester and they need a break?! Give me a break! (Pun intended)
Here the schools begin after labour day in September and end on the 30th of June. March is the only "break" after Christmas, although the University students get a study break in February.

This year we start on August 13th, which is earlier than last year.

For me, when I was a child in elementary school and then a teen in high school back in the day, school would always start right after Labor Day. And summer vacation would start in the middle of June.

Most around here start mid August anymore.
