Most foreigners who I have met be they Germans, Swiss, Australians, Americans or the English I have had to make an effort to understand when they start speaking. Most Indians specially those who have had English as their first language have a clear accent. Am I not glad here at myLot that we only read and not hear I just recorded my voice a while ago Here is the clip Can you record yours and upload it here?
Just saying hi to myLoters

It definitely takes a while to understand accents. I can understand 'proper' English as it is spoken in the south-east of England, also called BBC English, and the American English from the East Coast. I have problems with regional varieties. British English has more than American English because the latter is a language of immigrants and people who move a lot so that the way of pronouncing isn't as set as it is in countries where the population has lived in the same places more or less since Adam and Eve. Many Indians speak English very well (grammar, vocabulary) but it takes some time to get used to the accent if you come from a different part of the world.

@MALUSE I posted twice not once. I hope this post remains. I was telling you about my experiences with bosses. Then there was an interview I had gone for . He dictated something and I just could not follow. I asked him to repeat a particular word and he spelt it out to me. He admitted that his accent was difficult to follow and that was some consolation. He spelt the word s u dri dri e s t and the word was supposed to be suggest (lol) I got up and politely told him I would find it difficult to work with him This was when I just started my career as a secretary. I have uploaded a tiny clip recording my voice in my discussion - an edit

Understanding an accent is never easy. I agree with @MALUSE that Indian speak English very well, but it takes some time to get used to their accent. The most difficult to understand (in my opinion) are "French" speaking English. Most of the time I cannot understand a word. You have a clear voice, I can understand well what you say, but it's not the case with many Indians I met.

@LadyDuck Probably the staff you are talking about may not have had English as their first or second language. Some schools have no English subject at all.

@allknowing No, not all. We were at a hotel in Sint Maarten where the owner was Indian (I only remember his name Sanjay) and all the personnel were Indians. I understood very well Sanjay, but almost not a word of what the other said.

I'm so sorry your baby is still ill, and pray the antibiotics help her get well. I heard you perfectly and did recognize your accent, but you do speak English extremely well. Others, not so much.

Preiti had her 3 shots and we need to see that her kidneys do not get affected. She is otherwise active and alert. Thanks. Here in India those who have gone to good schools and have the right kind of exposure they speak good English.

I think accents change from place to place. Being a north Indian, I does not understand English of south Indian.

I wish Preety well!! Your diction was so clear. When I travel in different countries, I find it a little difficult to get their accent.

Everyone has a unique accent according to me. Having spent years in few countries my accent is sort of a mix. I adapt too to the circumstances to make myself understood. I can understand others' accents but at times they have their phrases which may not be that common - siva

Those phrases indeed blow us out. When we were in Singapore on a package tour as we were getting off the bus I heard the guide say 'mind your step' I thought I had stepped on a stoneh
