Do chicks really dig music and musicians? She grabbed my butt while I was playing!

I'm off to a music party today to celebrate the 70th birthday of our drummer's wife. I love playing music. Daniel Levitin, a neuroscientist who specializes in the psychology of music, writes that musicians are often seen as "sexy" by others. I once had a lady of about 95 years of age come up to the "stage" (using her walker) at an old-folks home gig. Steadying herself, as the aides looked at each other not knowing what to do, she grabbed my right butt cheek with her left hand. I made eye-contact with her and saw a mischievous younger woman deep in her eyes. She was smiling. I smiled back at her, and she then slowly returned to her seat. Do you think women (and men) find musicians "sexy"? Levitin even claims that a picture of a man with a guitar in his hands gets higher "attractiveness" ratings than the same picture with the guitar digitally removed. What do you think? Could I use my musicianship to attract women, not just dogs, cats, and...chickens?

My advice is to immediately start playing gigs at retirement homes.

Oh, we do. But I haven't had my butt grabbed (by anyone over 80) since that fateful day.

Before entering the post, I had this image of winged chicken and chicks flying up to have a bite at your butt...not anymore.

@TheHorse I am a bit disappointed they are not making you do break dance with their pecking at your butt cheek.

I did have one "fan" who was a chicken. She was at a friend's house and used to like sitting next to be or behind me (on a a patio couch) when I played.

I think Dr. Levitin has a very valid point. Consider: 1. Look at how butt-ugly Steve Tyler and Mick Jagger are. 2. Look at how many women they've had.

They had many women because their butts were ugly. If they had decent ones, the first one would have committed murders to keep them.

Good point! I think "slightly arrogant confidence," or what the young people call "swag," might help as well.

Me neither. The Beatles phenomenon confused me in childhood, and I enjoy my favorite female vocalists (Emmylou Harris, Alison Krauss, Eva Cassidy, Ella Fitzgerald, Koko Taylor) without getting "crushes" on them.

@vandana7 I suppose a guitar could be seen as somewhat "phallic" as well.

Oh yes, I do think that is true. I used to play music professionally. It never mattered what stage I was performing on, there was always a signal here or a glance there from somebody in the audience. I took it all in stride and continued with my 'work'.

@TheHorse That was probably the case. I usually didn't do any more than give a quick glance. I was afraid of making eye contact that lasted for more than 3 seconds or so. I always thought that would spell trouble.

I certainly think the leads of groups attract more attention than the lesser mortals supporting him/her. That's as far as I'm prepared to go.

Interesting point. I notice that the leads in the groups I've been in recently really like to do all the talking. Mark, from the Country band, pretty much forbids anyone else to engage the audience.

@TheHorse A lot of them have an ego I think - and often quite a fragile one.

I do think it does attract people. But when I am at the old folks home I get a lot of attention, I get cat calls as I walk by and yes I have been touched, its pretty cool to be so attractive to 80 years old and up.

I have never confronted something like that. I feel they are lonely. One lady took me to her room and did not want me to leave. Another gent also took us to his room. To consider he was a freedom fighter in youth made me shed a tear.

I like just watching (live) chickens. They make me laugh for some reason. But do like to eat them too.
4 Aug 18
Hahaha! It sounds like a glad experience to you! And I'll tell you what I think. Musicians always act with selfconfidence, while they're playing (all of you!), and when they do, they look really happy, like a fish on water! So, if you see someone smiling or concentrated while do something that really love to do, it makes people look more atractive or sexy!

I think almost everyone and everything is attracted to musicians. Once upon a time I took a spare college student with my crew on a lakeside picnic. He brought his guitar. When he would play two ducks would come out of the water and come enjoy it. He would stop, they would leave, only to return again when he would play some more. I like men who play guitar, but I also like my husband, who only plays the radio.

You know, I often hear older people say they still feel just as they did in their twenties. I bet that lady still felt she was that young and wanted a sweet young thing like you to help her feel that way for real! You could have had an entirely different story to tell us, pony! *grinning at you*
